Margate sits on the north Kent coast with about 63,000 residents. Its queer community is proportionally large for a town of this size, and the Pride parade that finishes at Dreamland each August draws a crowd that feels more like a small city’s than a seaside resort’s. Legally, England has had equal age of consent since 2001, civil partnerships since 2005 and same‑sex marriage since 2014; the Equality Act 2010 bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender reassignment.
The parts of town you’ll actually walk through are the Old Town (the lanes behind the harbour and Turner Contemporary, where La! sits on High Street), Cliftonville to the east (Northdown Road is its main strip, home to Margate Arts Club and the former CAMP), and the quieter Westbrook area to the west. Census data from 2021 shows Cliftonville West had one of the highest shares of LGBTQ+ residents of any English ward, which explains why the queer scene feels bigger than the bar count suggests.
La! and Lafayette’s occupies 13–15 High Street. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00, it serves drinks until midnight on weekdays and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday; a 12.5 % service charge applies to food and Google rates it 4.9. Downstairs there’s a dance floor, stage and VIP area that hosts drag, bingo, cabaret and karaoke. Margate Arts Club at 276 Northdown Road has been running since 2015; it opens Thursday evenings and stays late on Friday and Saturday, offering a strong sound system, drag, queer cabaret, performance art and dance nights. The venue also hosts Queer Knit and the occasional Queer Cuntry country night—a pop‑up that jumps between The Sun Deck on the seafront and the Arts Club. Margate Beach Club, 1 Albert Terrace, is a three‑floor bar with sea views that markets itself as queer‑powered; it runs drag shows and DJ nights, though reviewers note mixed experiences with the door staff.
Sundowners, the seafront gay bar that opened in 2006, shut its doors for good in November 2024 after a brief, troubled reopening under Proud Pink Inns. CAMP, the queer bar and community hub at 125 Northdown Road, closed on 8 August 2026, citing rent and council costs. Neither venue appears on current Google maps, but older guides still list them. Margate has no gay sauna; the last one in Kent (Alpha Spa, Maidstone) closed in 2018. Mainstream wellness saunas on the beach are Sea Scrub and Haeckels. The nearest gay sauna is in London, about 90 minutes away by train. There’s no confirmed cruising spot in Thanet; the closest naturist beach is Shellness on the Isle of Sheppey, roughly 45 km west, while Long Rock at Swalecliffe is no longer council‑recognised.
Margate Pride, a grassroots non‑profit founded in 2016, holds its main day on the second Saturday of August. In 2025 the event ran on 9 August with a family programme at Walpole Bay lawns, a seafront march at 13:00 and a free show on Dreamland’s Scenic Stage until 20:00. The 10th‑anniversary Pride took place on 8 August 2026, part of a festival that ran from 31 July through August; the 2027 date is still unannounced. Nearby celebrations include Ramsgate Pride (19 September 2026), Broadstairs Pride (started 2025) and Pride Canterbury (12 June 2027). Community groups listed in the May 2026 StrangeTourist newsletter range from Queer Swim at Walpole Bay tidal pool and Queer Run on Wednesday evenings to Wavey FC (football for women, non‑binary and trans players), Trans Club Margate, Queer Knit, Crafty Queers, Margate Queer Writers, Queer Walks East Kent and LGBTQ Kent Tennis. The Margate Queer Library and Archive runs a Wednesday reading group, and sexual‑health appointments are available at the Flete Clinic, QEQM Hospital, Ramsgate Road (0300 790 0245).
High‑speed trains from London St Pancras reach Margate in about 1 hour 25 minutes (usually 1 hour 35), while slower services from Victoria take roughly 1 hour 50. Manston Airport has no passenger flights; Gatwick and London City are each 110–130 km away, and the easiest route is the train via London. The station sits on the seafront at Westbrook’s end of the Sands; the Old Town is a ten‑minute walk, Northdown Road about 25 minutes. Loop buses run along the coast to Broadstairs and Ramsgate.
Where to Stay
Accommodation isn’t gay‑run, but the town’s boutique hotels are accustomed to same‑sex couples. Options near the Old Town and La! include No42 by GuestHouse, Old Town House on Market Place and Fort Road Hotel overlooking the sea. In Cliftonville, Margate House on Dalby Square and the Edwardian‑styled Walpole Bay Hotel sit close to Northdown Road. Westbrook Lodge offers a quieter B&B west of the station. Summer weekends and Pride weekend fill up fast, so book early. On the ground, visible queer couples blend in without drawing a stare, though the seafront can get rowdy on summer nights. The Supreme Court’s April 2025 ruling that “sex” in the Equality Act means biological sex has prompted some single‑sex services to revise trans‑inclusion policies; local trans and queer groups are good first points of contact if you need advice.
Yes, one: La! and Lafayette's at 13–15 High Street in the Old Town, opened in November 2024 by the team that ran Sundowners. It's a bar and bistro with a basement club for drag, bingo and karaoke, open Wednesday to Sunday until 2am at weekends. Margate Arts Club on Northdown Road is queer-led and runs drag and cabaret nights, and Margate Beach Club on the seafront is an inclusive bar with drag shows.
No. CAMP, the queer bar and community space at 125 Northdown Road in Cliftonville, closed on 8 August 2026 after four years, with the owners citing rent and council costs. Sundowners, the seafront gay bar, closed in November 2024. Both still turn up in older guides.
Margate Pride Day is the second Saturday of August. It was on 9 August 2025 and 8 August 2026 (the 10th anniversary). The day starts on the Walpole Bay lawns at 10:00, marches along the seafront at 13:00 and ends with a free show on Dreamland's Scenic Stage. The 2027 date hadn't been announced at the time of writing; check margatepride.org.
No. There's no gay sauna in Margate, Thanet or Canterbury, and the beach saunas on the seafront are mainstream wellness saunas. We couldn't confirm any cruising area in Thanet, so we don't list one. The nearest gay saunas are in London, about 90 minutes away by train.
Southeastern high-speed trains from London St Pancras take about 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 35 minutes. Slower trains from London Victoria take about 1 hour 50. Manston airport has no passenger flights, so if you fly in, take the train via London from Gatwick or London City.
Yes. It's one of the easiest towns in England to be openly queer in, with a large LGBTQ+ population (especially in Cliftonville), a community-run Pride and dozens of grassroots queer groups, from Queer Swim at Walpole Bay to a trans-inclusive football club. Same-sex marriage has been legal in England since 2014.
