À propos de ce lieu Alice Austen House

Alice Austen (1866-1952) was one of America's first women documentary photographers. Between roughly 1880 and 1930 she made close to 8,000 photographic plates — of immigrant arrivals at Battery Park, of the Staten Island suburbs, of the early tennis women's circuit — with a technical mastery that put her in dialogue with Alfred Stieglitz and the Photo-Secession. She lost her fortune in the 1929 crash and spent her last years in the Staten Island poorhouse; the New York State Historical Association rediscovered her negatives in the 1950s. Austen lived at "Clear Comfort", the 17th-century Dutch cottage her family bought in 1844, from age two until 1945. From 1917 onwards she shared the house openly with her partner, dance teacher Gertrude Tate; they lived together for 53 years. Tate cared for Austen in her final poverty and asked to be buried with her (the two women's families refused). The house is now a museum operated by the non-profit Alice Austen House. In 2017 the National Park Service designated it a National Historic Landmark and one of the first officially recognised LGBTQ historic sites in the National Register. Displays include original prints, Austen's cameras, and — since a 2018 re-interpretation — a full accounting of her partnership with Tate that earlier exhibits had glossed over. A ferry from Manhattan (free) takes 25 minutes; a 15-minute walk south from the terminal reaches the house. Grounds and gardens open dawn to dusk; museum Tuesday-Sunday, suggested donation $5. Worth an afternoon: it's the only historic-house museum in New York whose queer couple is now on the label.

This spot is incredible! The location, the house, the surrounding greenery, and the breathtaking views are truly beyond description. I especially love seeing the Verrazano Bridge, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and New Jersey from here. It's one of the best promenades for a walk or just to sit and relax. 🤩

Very nice park and great view of NYC. Easy to find. The area is nice and clean . You can sit under a tree and overlook the Hudson and learn some History while you’re there. I was there for the 4th of July. It was very nice gathering of people and the perfect spot to watch the boats and jets go by.

I had such a lovely time exploring this historic home and learning all about the life and work of the photographer who once lived here. The views of the water are just beautiful, and the house itself has such a unique, charming atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It is a quiet and peaceful little gem that I am so glad I took the time to visit while I was in the area
