The honest summary: Alton is a river town of about 25,000 people, half an hour north of St. Louis, and it has exactly one LGBTQ+ bar. That bar, Bubby & Sissy's on Belle Street, has been open since 2001 and carries most of the town's queer social life: drag on weekends, drag brunches, a monthly potluck. Add a free Pride street festival every September and a volunteer group that works mostly with queer teenagers, and you have the whole scene. For anything more (several bars, a bathhouse, a big Pride), people drive to St. Louis.
Legal in one line: Illinois was the first US state to decriminalise gay sex (1962), recognised civil unions in 2011 and opened marriage to same-sex couples on 1 June 2014. State law bans discrimination on sexual orientation and gender identity, and a ban on conversion therapy for minors has applied since 1 January 2016.
Where the scene is
There is no gay district. What there is sits downtown, in the grid of brick streets between the riverfront and the bluffs. Belle Street is the axis: Bubby & Sissy's is at number 602, and the Pride festival closes Belle Street between 4th and 7th streets each September. Broadway, one block from the river, is where the antique shops, restaurants and the two downtown places to stay are. Downtown is walkable. Almost everything else in Alton, including the chain hotels, needs a car.
Bars and nightlife
Bubby & Sissy's (602 Belle St) is the only LGBTQ+ bar in Alton, and the only one we found in Godfrey, East Alton or Wood River either. It opened in 2001. In 2025 a group of longtime regulars took over and renovated it, and the bar now calls itself LGBTQIA+ owned. Its Google profile mentions drag shows on Friday and Saturday nights and dance music every night. Out x Out and Rivers & Routes describe it as a community queer bar.
The bar also sells tickets for drag brunches on Eventbrite (buffet from 11am, show at noon, 21+), and holds a free birthday potluck on the third Tuesday of every month, which its website calls its longest-running tradition. Its own site gives the hours as Monday to Saturday 3pm to 1am and Sunday 2pm to 1am. That 1am finish is citywide: Alton's council brought bar closing time forward in late 2025, so older listings that say 2am or 3am are out of date. Parking is free.
Other bars in town are mainstream. You'll be fine in most of the downtown taverns, but none of them markets itself to a queer crowd, so we don't list them as gay.

Saunas, cruising and adult venues
Alton has no gay sauna, bathhouse or sex club, and we found no documented cruising area. The nearest bathhouse and the rest of the region's gay bars are in St. Louis (see our St. Louis guide). For free HIV, hepatitis C and STI testing, the Madison County Health Department in Wood River, about 8 km from downtown, takes appointments four days a week.
Alton Pride
The Alton Pride Festival is a free one-day street festival on Belle Street, held on a Saturday in mid-September. It ran on 13 September 2025 (11am to 8pm) and on 12 September 2026 (11am to 7pm), when Enjoy Illinois billed it as the 5th annual: booths, food, drag performances, drag bingo and a pup parade, with the official afterparty at Bubby & Sissy's. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.
The festival is run by Alton Pride, a volunteer 501(c)(3) founded in 2019. According to OutInSTL, a former owner of Bubby & Sissy's was one of its co-founders. The first festival was planned for October 2020 and postponed by the pandemic; the first one actually held on Belle Street was in September 2022.

Community and support
There is no LGBTQ+ community centre in Alton. Alton Pride fills part of that gap. It runs the Piasa Youth Alliance, a private group for students in grades 8 to 12 that meets twice a month. It also holds a monthly support group, awards scholarships to graduating seniors, collects free prom clothing and runs a Thanksgiving food drive (RiverBender.com covers its work regularly). Contact is through altonpride.com or Instagram @altonpride5. We couldn't confirm an active PFLAG chapter in Alton or the Metro East.
Where to stay
For walking distance to Belle Street, stay downtown. The Alton Cracker Factory rents short-stay apartments and lofts with river views in a converted factory on East Broadway. The Tiffany Inn is a three-room B&B above a stained-glass studio a few doors along. Beall Mansion is a B&B in a historic house up the hill on East 12th Street.
With a car, the Homer M. Adams Parkway strip, about 10 minutes from downtown, has the chains: Hampton Inn & Suites, Holiday Inn Express and the Best Western Plus Parkway. The Alton-St. Louis Area Hotel on College Avenue is the big conference option. For a quiet night on the river road, the Green Tree Inn is in the village of Elsah, about 16 km upstream.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled
- The Mineral Springs Hotel (301 E Broadway) is a historic building, not a working hotel. It is used as an event venue and, according to its Google listing, closes for renovation on 31 December 2026.
- Your Boutique Hotel (formerly WOW on Broadway) is now listed as an event space rented "airbnb style", not a hotel.
- "Pride Inc." in Godfrey is a town beautification charity. It has nothing to do with Alton Pride.
- Older bar hours: listings that show Bubby & Sissy's open until 2am or 3am predate the city's 1am closing rule.
- Getting there: St. Louis Lambert airport (STL) is about 23 miles away, roughly 30 minutes by car. Downtown St. Louis is about 25 miles south. There is no practical rail link, so plan on driving or a ride-share, and agree on a driver before the late drag show.
- Combine it with St. Louis: Alton works best as a day or evening out from St. Louis, or as a quiet river-town base with one good bar.
- Check before you go: show nights and brunch dates change. The bar's own calendar at bubbysissys.com and its Facebook page are the most current sources.
- Time zone: Alton is on Central Time, the same as St. Louis.

FAQ
Is there a gay bar in Alton, Illinois?
Yes, one: Bubby & Sissy's at 602 Belle Street, open since 2001 and LGBTQIA+ owned since a group of regulars took over in 2025. It has drag shows on weekends and drag brunches, and is open daily until 1am.
When is Alton Pride?
On a Saturday in mid-September, on Belle Street downtown. It was 13 September 2025 and 12 September 2026. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing; check altonpride.com.
Is Alton safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
Generally yes. Illinois has some of the strongest LGBTQ+ protections in the Midwest, and Alton has held a public Pride festival every year since 2022. It is still a small Midwestern town, so expect the usual small-town mix of attitudes away from downtown.
Is there a gay sauna or cruising area in Alton?
No. There is no bathhouse or sex club, and we found no documented cruising area. The nearest are in St. Louis.
Where should I stay in Alton?
Downtown if you want to walk to Bubby & Sissy's: the Alton Cracker Factory or the Tiffany Inn on Broadway. The chain hotels are on the Homer M. Adams Parkway, about 10 minutes away by car.
