Best Gay Bars & Clubs in Austin

Austin's gay bars mainly cluster on 4th Street in the Warehouse District, a strip running a few hundred yards between Colorado and Lavaca Streets. Unlike some gay districts that feel separate, 4th Street blends right into the rest of the Warehouse District. You can easily bounce between gay and mixed venues.

The crowd on 4th Street is classic Austin: mixed ages, not too cliquey, and generally laid-back about clothes or social boxes. This isn't a city where the bar scene rigidly sorts itself. It makes for a less predictable, but often more welcoming, night out.

4th Street: What's There

There's enough variety here for a full night of bar-hopping. You'll find cocktail bars with patio seating, a dance club that gets going after midnight, drag shows several nights a week, and at least one venue that leans bear-friendly. Most places are open seven nights, though Monday and Tuesday crowds are much thinner.

Patios are a big deal in Austin. Outdoor seating on 4th Street gets heavy use from September through May. In summer, daytime patios are rough, but evenings usually cool enough to use them by 9 or 10pm.

Drag Nights

Austin has a strong drag scene, and it's a major draw. Several 4th Street venues host drag shows multiple nights a week, featuring local performers with real followings. If you want to catch a show, check venue schedules before you arrive—nights with popular queens fill up, and some places charge a cover.

Beyond 4th Street

A few queer-friendly bars exist outside 4th Street: some on South Congress, others in East Austin. These are usually mixed rather than exclusively gay, but they serve queer clientele and host LGBTQ+ events on specific nights. East Austin, especially, has a newer, younger queer scene that functions more like a network of friendly spots than a defined district.

The Bars

• — The outdoor stage area sounds great. Drinks are good and priced right. Staff are professional and service is fast, even when it's packed. Definitely recommend.
• Highland Lounge — The energy here is fantastic, and the show is a blast! Go if you want a great night out.
• Neon Grotto — We had a blast here. Great service, fun atmosphere, and the dance floor in the back is super fun. Don't miss the roof—great dance party up there. We also came for a RuPaul drag show watch party with three live drag queens hosting; it was super fun.
• — Friendly and inviting. Staff are super nice and helpful. The bar has a great selection of spirits and beers. Bathrooms are unisex and super clean. There's a great patio with a grill going, serving burgers. A wonderful, entertaining show on a Sunday. Felt very safe and at ease; patrons were also friendly and polite. The inside bar and outdoor patio are very clean and well decorated. Love the music and lighting.
• Outer Heaven Disco Club — A one-of-a-kind spot. The owner clearly cares about the place. It's an artistic venue that becomes a dance club on weekends, with unique, groovy remixed tunes from the DJ. Weeknight karaoke is always fun; the audience is right in front of you, which makes it easier and a lot of fun to participate. I feel like I'm part of something when I go here. Great place to be social.
• Rain — The dance floor gets going, music blaring. Gogo boys on weekends. There's a back patio for smokers. Easy to get a drink with four bars. Bartenders didn't smile, even during less busy times.
• — The staff are always friendly. You can go any day and find something you like. The food is always good, and I like that they change the menu often.

Practical Notes

Texas last call is 2am, like Colorado. Most 4th Street venues stick to this, no exceptions. Some bars start winding down by 1:30am. For a full night out, get there before midnight on a weekend.

Cover charges are rare on regular nights at most 4th Street venues. Special events—big drag shows, themed parties, holiday weekends—often charge $5-10 at the door.

Rideshare is the easiest way back to your hotel from 4th Street. The area is reliably busy enough that weekend night pickups are quick.
