⚠️ Safety Notice — China (LGBTQ+ Score: 22/100)

Same-sex activity in China is not illegal (decriminalised 1997) but there are no legal protections for LGBTQ+ people, and the post-2021 environment has seen sustained official pressure on the community. Exercise discretion in public. Use a VPN — download and configure one before arriving in China. Read our full China safety guide.

Beijing: China's Most Active Current LGBTQ+ Scene

Beijing's gay scene has outlasted the more internationally visible Shanghai scene in part because it operated with less public profile to begin with. The Workers' Stadium (Gongti) area in Chaoyang District remains the clearest concentration of LGBTQ+ venues in mainland China: Destination (目的地) is the largest gay club; Tube Bar (管子) is the casual local option nearby; Score in Sanlitun provides an accessible entry point in a more international environment.

Beijing Pride has operated intermittently and with decreasing public visibility; there is no formal outdoor Pride event in the current environment. Community events happen informally — check Blued for current listings.

Navigating the Scene

The Beijing gay scene operates without visible LGBTQ+ signage. Venues are accessible but understated: you need to know where to go. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples are inadvisable. The Workers' Stadium area is well-known within the Beijing gay community and widely documented — it is not hidden, but it maintains a low external profile.

Apps: Blued is the primary tool for navigating the Beijing scene — works without a VPN, large local user base, and includes venue listings and event information. Grindr requires a VPN.

VPN: Configure before arrival. Download and test from outside China — obtaining a VPN within the country is increasingly restricted.

Getting There

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) serve the capital. The Workers' Stadium is accessible by Metro Line 10 (Tuanjiehu station) or Line 2 (Dongsishitiao station, then taxi). Sanlitun is a short walk from Tuanjiehu station.
