⚠️ Safety Notice — China (LGBTQ+ Score: 22/100)

Same-sex activity in China is not illegal (decriminalised 1997) but there are no legal protections, and the post-2021 environment involves increased official scrutiny of LGBTQ+ spaces. Chengdu's social atmosphere is notably more relaxed than other Chinese cities, but national-level restrictions apply. Use a VPN — configure before arriving. Read our full China safety guide.

Chengdu: China's Most Openly Gay City

Within the constrained landscape of mainland Chinese LGBTQ+ life, Chengdu stands out. The Sichuan capital has a well-documented reputation as the most socially tolerant city in China for LGBTQ+ people — a reputation built on its famously leisure-oriented culture, its large university population, and a regional character that is less rigid than the north. The scene is visibly more open than Beijing or Shanghai: venues are more explicitly identified, crowds are more openly gay, and the social atmosphere is more relaxed.

Funky Town in the Wuhou university district is the anchor — a genuine gay club with drag shows, themed nights and the most openly gay crowd in mainland China. Studio near Taikoo Li provides the city-centre cocktail bar option. Pink Bar in Wuhou is the neighbourhood community option.

Why Chengdu Is Different

Chengdu's LGBTQ+ tolerance is rooted in its broader social culture. The city is known across China for a relaxed, pleasure-oriented way of life — mahjong in teahouses, hot pot at midnight, a pace of life that is notably more casual than Beijing or Shanghai. This cultural baseline extends to social attitudes: Chengdu's residents are generally less invested in policing social norms. The large student population reinforces this. The result is the most liveable city in mainland China for LGBTQ+ people under the current national conditions.
