Gay Saunas in Montevideo

Montevideo has two dedicated men-only gay saunas, both a short walk or cheap taxi ride apart in the city centre. In a place whose queer nightlife is small and integrated, the saunas double as social hubs - somewhere to relax, meet people and escape the Rio de la Plata weather any afternoon of the week.

Toronto Sauna

Toronto Sauna (Tacuarembo 1531, Centro/Cordon) is the larger and best-known of the two. It is an ample, long-running spot with a dry sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi, solarium, massage room, an X-rated cinema, a bar serving drinks, and cruising areas. It opens in the afternoon (roughly 3pm) and runs into the evening, staying open later on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Sauna Horus

Horus (Julio Herrera y Obes 1240, Centro) is the smaller, more intimate option. Over a cosy multi-level layout it packs in a dry and wet sauna, a jacuzzi, a cruise cellar with private rooms and open cubicles, a small bar and a cinema room. It opens daily from about 3pm (until 9pm Monday to Thursday, 10pm Friday to Sunday). Facilities are old-school rather than glossy, but the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.

Good to Know

Both saunas are central and easy to reach on foot from most downtown hotels or by a short, cheap taxi ride. Bring nothing valuable, follow the house etiquette, and remember that Uruguay is relaxed and non-judgemental - the atmosphere is friendly rather than furtive.
