The honest summary: Haiphong is Vietnam's big northern port city, a working town of French-era boulevards, flame trees and shipping cranes about 105 km east of Hanoi. It has no gay scene you can walk into. We searched in English and Vietnamese for gay bars, clubs, cafés, saunas, men's massage spas, community groups and Pride events, and we couldn't verify a single dedicated LGBTQ+ venue that was open in 2025 or 2026. Gay life here happens on dating apps and in private circles. Come for the Opera House, crab noodle soup and the boats to Cát Bà and Lan Ha Bay; for gay nightlife, Hanoi's bars and saunas are an hour and a half away by car.
Legal in one line: Same-sex relations have never been a crime in Vietnam; since 2015 same-sex weddings are no longer banned but they have no legal recognition, there's no anti-discrimination law, the Health Ministry said in 2022 that being LGBT is not an illness, and the planned gender-affirmation law was shelved in September 2024.
Is there a gay bar in Haiphong?
No, not one we could confirm. If you search "quán bar gay Hải Phòng" you'll get pages of ordinary pubs and lounge bars from food-listing sites; none of them presents itself as gay or queer, and none turns up in a gay travel guide, so we don't label them. The same goes for "sauna" and "massage nam" (men's massage) searches: the results are either Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City businesses or spam pages. Freelance massage ads circulate on Facebook and Zalo, but they aren't venues and we don't list them.
That's the normal picture for a Vietnamese provincial city. In Da Nang and Hanoi the scene is built around a few small bars and a cluster of men-only saunas and massage spas; Haiphong never developed even that. Gay men from Haiphong tend to go to Hanoi for a night out, or meet through apps and friends.
Gone or never there, but still Googled
A "queer district" in Cát Bi. One international home-share site describes Cát Bi as the heart of queer Haiphong. Cát Bi is the airport area. There's no gay district there or anywhere else in the city.
"LGBT welcoming" hotel filters. Booking sites show Haiphong and Cát Bà hotels with LGBTQ-welcoming badges. Hotels choose those badges themselves; they tell you nothing about a scene.
Hanoi and Saigon venue names. Lists of "Haiphong gay saunas" often repeat Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City businesses. Check the address before you go anywhere.
The nearest scene: Hanoi
The Hanoi–Haiphong expressway, fully open since 2015, makes Hanoi about 1 to 1.5 hours away by car, and Grab or a private car is the easy way to do a night trip. The train from Long Biên or Hanoi station takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, with around four departures a day. Hanoi has three dedicated gay bars, R7 with drag shows, the long-running GC Bar and the weekend club BirdCage, plus gay saunas such as P6 and Soi. See our Hanoi guide for the full picture.
Pride and events
Haiphong has never held its own Pride, as far as we could find. Vietnam's Pride movement, VietPride, started in Hanoi in August 2012 and has since run events in dozens of cities, with the biggest editions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC's 2024 edition ran 21 to 29 September, with a parade on Nguyễn Huệ walking street). A 2014 NGO report mentions an IDAHOT bike rally in Haiphong, but we couldn't confirm the year or that it has happened since. Dates for the 2027 VietPride events had not been announced at the time of writing.
The city's own big event is the Red Flamboyant Festival (Lễ hội Hoa Phượng Đỏ) in May, timed for the anniversary of the city's liberation on 13 May 1955. In 2026 the main week ran 8 to 14 May, with night-time events around the central flower-garden strip and Opera House square. It isn't an LGBTQ+ event, but it's the liveliest week of the year to visit.
Dating apps and staying safe
Grindr, Blued and other apps work normally in Vietnam and they're how most gay men in Haiphong meet. Vietnam isn't a dangerous country for gay visitors, and we found no reports of police targeting gay men in Haiphong, but the usual app risks apply. Vietnamese media regularly report lure-and-rob schemes in which a date arranged online ends with theft or blackmail, including a Facebook "romance trap" gang that robbed young men in Lê Chân. In 2012 a gay man was killed in Ngô Quyền after propositioning two young men he'd just met.
Meet first in a busy café or hotel lobby, not at a private address.
Tell a friend where you're going and share your Grab trip.
Keep your passport, spare cards and most of your cash in the hotel safe.
Don't accept drinks you didn't see poured, and leave if the story changes.
Public affection between two men draws stares rather than trouble, but Haiphong is more conservative than Hanoi or Saigon, so most local couples keep it low-key.
Haiphong's Center for Disease Control (Trung tâm Kiểm soát bệnh tật thành phố Hải Phòng), at 21 Lê Đại Hành in the old Hồng Bàng district, is the city's public HIV and infectious-disease service. Vietnam's HIV programme offered PrEP in 31 provinces and cities at more than 200 facilities by the end of 2024, and most PrEP users are men who have sex with men. Ask the CDC for the nearest testing or PrEP clinic. If you want an English-speaking LGBTQ-friendly clinic, Hanoi has more options.
Where to stay
None of these hotels is gay-run or gay-focused; they're simply the best-located mainstream options. The old centre around the Opera House (old Hồng Bàng and Ngô Quyền) is the walkable part of town.
Pullman Hai Phong Grand Hotel, 12 Trần Phú: Accor five-star by the river, with 364 rooms and a rooftop bar, a short walk from the Opera House.
Vietnam abolished its urban districts on 1 July 2025, and on the same day Hải Dương province was merged into Haiphong, which now covers 3,195 km² and about 4.66 million people. Locals still use the old district names. Hồng Bàng is the colonial core with the Opera House, the museum and Điện Biên Phủ street. Ngô Quyền holds the business district along Lạch Tray and Văn Cao, both known for street food. Lê Chân is home to the old temples and the Waterfront City development. Hải An is the airport and port side. None of them is a gay neighbourhood.
What to do
Haiphong Opera House, built 1904–1912 and modelled on the Palais Garnier, anchors the central flower-garden strip.
Hàng Kênh communal house (1717), known for its ironwood carvings with more than 300 dragons, and Dư Hàng pagoda, whose origins go back to the Lý dynasty.
Cát Bà and Lan Ha Bay. UNESCO extended the Hạ Long Bay World Heritage site to the Cát Bà archipelago on 16 September 2023. The Phù Long cable car crosses to Cát Bà in about 15 minutes (60,000 VND one way in 2025), and car ferries run from Đồng Bài to Cái Viềng; expect queues on holiday weekends.
Đồ Sơn, the city's beach resort, is about 20 km south-east of the centre. Neither Đồ Sơn nor Cát Bà has a gay beach.
Food: bánh đa cua (red rice noodles in crab broth), nem cua bể (square sea-crab spring rolls) and bánh mì que, the thin chilli-pâté baguette Haiphong is known for.
Getting there and around
Cat Bi International Airport (HPH) is 5 to 8 km from the centre, with domestic flights to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Phu Quoc and other cities, plus a few international routes such as Incheon and Bangkok. A new terminal is due in 2027. Most international visitors fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai airport and drive about two hours. In town, Grab has operated since 2017 and is the easiest way to get around.
A few words
Xin chào: hello. Cảm ơn: thank you.
Đồng tính nam: gay man (neutral). Đồng tính nữ: lesbian. Người chuyển giới: trans person. "Gay", "les" and "LGBT" are also used as they are.
Bê đê (or pê đê) and bóng are slurs. Some queer Vietnamese use them among themselves, but visitors shouldn't.
