Gay Plymouth: the honest 2026 guide

The honest summary: Plymouth is a naval port of about 270,000 people on Plymouth Sound, where Devon meets Cornwall. Its gay scene is small but real. There's a gay pub, a gay club, a men's sauna and, since late 2025, a queer community cafe. Three of the four are within a few minutes' walk of each other on Bretonside and the Barbican. There's no gay village and no strip of rainbow bars. Pride is a summer march and a day out on the Hoe, and it has had a shaky few years: cancelled in 2025, back in 2026. Come for the waterfront, the Barbican's old streets and the ferries to Brittany, and plan one good Saturday night around OMG and The Swallow.

Legal in one line: In England, civil partnerships have been available since December 2005 and same-sex marriage since 29 March 2014, and the Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender reassignment.

The bars

The Swallow, at 59-61 Bretonside, is the city's gay pub, and the local CAMRA branch calls it Plymouth's number one LGBT pub. The building has been a pub since 1823 and has had a few names along the way. It was Aristocrats in the 1980s and has been The Swallow since 1990, apart from short spells as G Spot and the Compass Inn in 2012-13. It closed in November 2025 and reopened after a refit on 13 March 2026. It's a proper pub with a late streak: pool (free on Wednesdays), darts, live music or DJs on Friday and Saturday, and drag nights such as Dragged to the Spotlight. CAMRA lists it as closed on Mondays, open from 17:00 Tuesday to Thursday and from 15:30 Friday to Sunday.

OMG, at 11a The Parade on the Barbican, is the club. Its weekly fixture is The BIG Gay Night Out every Saturday from 22:00 to 04:00. Entry is free, it's 18+, and the music is 90s, chart pop and RnB. There are drag and cabaret shows too, and touring Drag Race UK queens such as Baga Chipz have played it. The crowd is young and mixed. Other nights change, so check its Instagram before going midweek. OMG and The Swallow are about five minutes' walk apart, and that walk is Plymouth's whole gay bar crawl.

The sauna

Manticore Spa is Plymouth's only gay sauna, and it's for men only. It's on the top floor of 2 Union Street, the building with the Genting Casino. The door is a glass entrance with a buzzer marked Manticore Spa, on the Colin Campbell Court car park side. Gay guides list a dry sauna, a steam room, a cinema room, private cabins, a darkroom and a licensed bar. Its own website gives entry as £18 (£12 for under-25s). It opens 12:00-18:00 Sunday to Tuesday, until midnight on Friday and until 04:00 on Saturday, and is closed on Wednesday and Thursday. The calendar has themed nights, including Naked Mondays, Blackout parties and a T-Girls and Admirers afternoon.

Community, daytime and sober options

Sappho's Cafe & Community Space opened in November 2025 at 55 Bretonside, next door to The Swallow. A crowdfunder in January 2026 raised just over £14,000 to keep it going. By day it's a cafe. In the evenings and at weekends it hosts socials run by the Queer Out Loud collective: quizzes, a craft club, life drawing, swaps and film nights. If you don't drink, or you'd rather meet people before 10pm, start here.

The Barbican Theatre on Castle Street puts on drag cabaret from time to time, such as Life's a Drag with local queen Virina Flower in June 2026. It also co-hosted the Community Pride day. The University of Plymouth students' union runs an LGBT+ society. For support, the South West's LGBTQ+ charity is the Intercom Trust, which offers advocacy and low-cost counselling in Plymouth; its helpline is 0800 612 3010 (Monday to Friday, 9-4). For sexual health and free HIV testing, the Eddystone Trust is part of the city's sexual health partnership (freephone 0800 328 3508).

Pride and events

Plymouth Pride is run by Plymouth Pride CIC, a volunteer group set up in 2022. The first Plymouth Pride was on 22 August 2009, when Peter Tatchell led a procession from the Piazza to the Guildhall. The outdoor festival started in 2012 in Devonport Park. In 2024 Pride was on 22 June, with a march from the Theatre Royal and a festival in Central Park, and organisers say it usually draws 6,000 to 7,000 people. The 2025 event was cancelled because of a funding gap of about £12,000. A community-run alternative went ahead on 12 July instead. The 2026 Pride was held on Saturday 11 July on Plymouth Hoe, free, from 11:00 to 20:00, after last-minute National Lottery funding. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing, and the organisers are fundraising through a Pride 100 Club, so check before you plan a trip around it.

Other Prides within reach in 2026: Exeter on 9 May, Torbay on 13 June, and Cornwall Pride's county events, with the main one in Newquay in late August. Check each organiser for the 2027 dates.

The city's queer history is worth a look. Pride in Plymouth looks after the Plymouth LGBT Archive. It also publishes stories about places such as the Lockyer Tavern, a gay meeting place from the 1950s to the 1970s. The city also remembers Terry Sweet, who was killed in a homophobic attack in Central Park in November 1995. Bernard Hawken was left permanently disabled in the same attack, and its 30th anniversary was marked in 2025 with a campaign for a memorial.

Neighbourhoods

Bretonside and the Barbican are where the scene is now. Bretonside, by the old bus station site, has The Swallow and Sappho's. The Barbican is the old harbour quarter around Sutton Harbour, where OMG sits on The Parade among cobbled lanes, pubs and the Mayflower Steps. Union Street, built in the early 1800s to link Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport, was the sailors' nightlife strip for most of the 20th century and had underground gay clubs that are now gone. Manticore is the only gay venue left on it today. The Hoe is the big green clifftop above the Sound, with Smeaton's Tower and the Pride festival field. Royal William Yard, a former naval victualling yard in Stonehouse, is now restaurants and bars, mainstream but a good evening out.

Cruising and beaches

We don't list any outdoor cruising area in Plymouth. No park or spot was named by two independent, current sources. Manticore Spa is the legal, indoor option. There's no gay beach either. Whitsand Bay on the Cornish side has naturist stretches, but nothing we found calls it gay.

Where to stay

For the scene, stay on the east side of the centre. The Leonardo Hotel on Exeter Street (247 rooms, formerly the Jurys Inn) is a couple of minutes from The Swallow. The two Premier Inns on Sutton Harbour, at Lockyers Quay and Sutton Road, are a short walk round the harbour from OMG. For sea views, the Crowne Plaza on the Hoe has 211 rooms and an indoor pool. The Hoe also has two small hotels in old houses on Lockyer Street, the Invicta and the Drake. Millbay, near the ferry port, has the Moxy (opened 2023), the New Continental and the Victorian Gothic Duke of Cornwall. The Duke closed for repairs in February 2026 and was taking bookings again by October. For a splurge, Boringdon Hall in Plympton is a Tudor manor with a spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant, but you'll need a taxi into town. Budget picks near the station and Union Street are the Travelodge at Derry's Cross and the Copthorne at the top of Armada Way.

Closed or changed: gone but still Googled

Lockyer Tavern, Lockyer Street: the back-bar gay space of the 1950s to 1970s, demolished in the 1970s.

Aristocrats, G Spot and the Compass Inn: earlier names of The Swallow's building on Bretonside. It's the same pub.

The Swallow, November 2025 to March 2026: closed for a refit, now open again.

Club Inferno, 24 Lockyer Street: still tagged LGBTQ+ on some maps, but its last licence record ended in 2013. It's not open.

In Other Words, Mutley Plain: Plymouth's feminist and LGBT+ bookshop, closed in 2007.

Plymouth Pride 2025: cancelled. It returned in July 2026.

Names such as Clarence, Pirate's Cove, Twisted or Club Zero show up on some auto-generated lists of Plymouth gay bars. We found no evidence that any of them is, or was recently, a gay venue in Plymouth.

Practical tips

Getting there: Plymouth's own airport closed in 2011. Exeter (EXT) and Newquay (NQY) airports are each about 49 miles away, roughly an hour by road. GWR trains to London Paddington take just over three hours. Brittany Ferries sails from Millbay to Roscoff from spring to autumn, and to Santander twice a week.

Getting Around

Getting around: the centre, the Barbican, the Hoe and Bretonside are all within walking distance of each other. Late on a Saturday, use a licensed taxi rather than walking home alone through the empty city centre.

Timing: Saturday is the night. OMG's weekly gay night and The Swallow's busiest hours both fall then. Pride, when it happens, is in June or July.

Across the river: Saltash and the Rame Peninsula are in Cornwall, reached over the Tamar Bridge or by the Torpoint ferry. Saltash has its own small Pride.

A few words

"Dreckly" is Devon and Cornwall slang for "soon, eventually", as in "I'll get there dreckly". "Proper job" means great. A "Janner" is someone from Plymouth.
