Earth and Sky", by Sungi Mlengeya at Les Filles du Calvaire
About the event
Photo: Disclosure
Black female figures emerging from vast white spaces mark the first solo exhibition in France by Tanzanian artist Sungi Mlengeya at Les Filles du Calvaire, in partnership with Afriart Gallery, curated by Daudi Karungi. Conceived after the artist's mother's death, "Earth and Sky" does not dwell on finitude, but on what remains: inherited gestures, ways of thinking, and creative impulses that transcend generations. The negative space, already central to Mlengeya's minimalist pictorial language, here takes on the meaning of a "sky"—a projection field where invisible presences and legacies persist. The title reflects this dual movement between rooting and expansion, suggesting that life transforms and continues to unfold in subsequent generations, rather than simply extinguishing.
