Amar Kanwar at Serpentine North

A trio of hypnotic films transforms the Serpentine North into a meditative, visual, and sonic environment in this solo exhibition by Indian filmmaker and artist Amar Kanwar, based in New Delhi. The exhibition features the feature film 'Such a Morning' (2017) — a parable about a mathematician who retreats to an abandoned train car and begins cataloging forty-nine types of darkness —, the seven-screen installation 'The Peacock’s Graveyard' (2023), presented for the first time in London, and the world premiere of 'The Charcoal Man' (2026), a new seven-screen installation commissioned by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi, which revisits the Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Throughout his career of more than two decades, Kanwar has developed his own language between documentary, visual essay, and fable to address displacement, violence, and memory from the Indian context, without ever abandoning universal questions about justice and power. The exhibition marks the artist's return to the British institution, eighteen years after his participation in the group exhibition 'Indian Highway' (2008), and will be accompanied by a special catalog organized by Sherna Dastur.
