Vinyl record covers become raw material for images in this new exhibition by Christian Marclay at White Cube Paris, which features unprecedented monotypes and collages within the square format of an LP. For over four decades, Marclay has been working with found materials in the tradition of readymades, inking 7", 10", and 12" record covers and inserts and transferring them to paper as unique prints, registering folds, creases, and signs of use — tactile traces of objects that carry both sound and memory. In the new series "Oculi," Marclay uses vintage vinyl covers whose central circular opening, originally made to reveal the record label, functions as a frame: through it emerge fragments of hands, eyes, and mouths present on the covers beneath. Through this play between selection and concealment, the packaging that once only protected the record becomes a compositional tool.
