Emma Reyes at White Cube

Paintings and works on paper by Colombian artist Emma Reyes (1919-2003) arrive at White Cube Mason's Yard for the artist's first solo exhibition in the UK, as part of the "Inside the White Cube" series, dedicated to artists not yet represented by the gallery. Over a career spanning nearly six decades, the self-taught artist reinterpreted the genres of portraiture and still life using references such as pre-Columbian artifacts, embroidery, and basketry, constructing densely patterned surfaces to highlight the connections between elements of the living world. The exhibition focuses on the artist's final series, "Les Masques," begun in Bordeaux in 1990, in which Reyes abandons portraiture as individual likeness in favor of a broader image of the human, absorbing simplified forms of ritual masks from American, Asian, Oceanic, and African traditions.
