About this place Museu da Diversidade Sexual

São Paulo put Latin America's first LGBT museum inside a metro station — and the choice is the message. The Museu da Diversidade Sexual opened in 2012 in the mezzanine of Estação República, in the historic downtown blocks that were the city's gay district decades before Frei Caneca and the Pride mega-parade, and every one of the station's daily thousands walks past its doors. Run by the São Paulo state culture secretariat, the museum mounts rotating exhibitions of art, memory and activism — recent seasons have ranged from Pajubá (the queer slang born of Afro-Brazilian religious communities) to re-readings of the Pinacoteca's collection through an LGBTQIA+ lens. Visiting: Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm, free, directly inside República station (Lines 3-Red and 4-Yellow). Compact — under an hour — and the natural anchor of a queer downtown walk, in the city that hosts the largest Pride parade on Earth.
