Diversidad Valparaíso

Diversidad Valparaíso is the primary LGBTQ+ community organisation operating in Chile's fifth region, serving both the city of Valparaíso and the broader regional area that includes Viña del Mar and the coastal communities. The organisation operates in the context of a city with a strong bohemian and artistically oriented LGBTQ+ community — Valparaíso's character as a port city with a long history of cultural mixing and creative immigration has created a social environment that is broadly more tolerant than the Chilean average, even before the legal changes of recent decades. Diversidad Valparaíso coordinates the annual Marcha del Orgullo — the city's Pride march — which has become one of the more significant regional Pride events in Chile, drawing approximately 30,000 people each November. The November timing distinguishes the Valparaíso march from Santiago's June/July event, creating a complementary calendar for LGBTQ+ events across the country. The organisation also provides advocacy and support services for LGBTQ+ people in the region — particularly important in the context of a city with significant socioeconomic inequality, where a portion of the gay male community lives in conditions very different from the gentrified Cerro Alegre that most visitors experience.
