Last verified: October 2026. Tokyo has no gay-owned hotel we could verify and no men-only gay hotel in the Western sense. What it has is a single male-only hostel that openly courts gay guests (HOTEL ADONIS in Minami-Aoyama), a few men-only capsule hotels that are simply single-sex by Japanese custom, and gay saunas such as Jinya and the 24 Kaikan branches that sell overnight stays. Everything else is mainstream, and in Tokyo that works fine: same-sex couples get checked in without fuss at almost every hotel. Nearly all the gay nightlife is packed into a few blocks of Shinjuku Ni-chome, there's no all-night metro, and a taxi across the city costs real money. So the main decision is how many minutes you'll be from Naka-dori at 3 am. This guide covers the walkable zone, the men-only options, booking and visitor rules, the 2027 tax change, Pride 2027 and getting home after the last train.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

The walkable zone is small. Ni-chome is the grid between Shinjuku-dori to the south and Yasukuni-dori to the north, east of Meiji-dori. Naka-dori runs north–south through the middle of it, and the side lanes off it hold several hundred tiny bars, most on upper floors of plain buildings. Shinjuku-sanchome station (Marunouchi, Fukutoshin and Toei Shinjuku lines) has exits that come up 1–3 min from Naka-dori. Shinjuku station's east exit is 10–12 min away. Anything within about 1 km of Naka-dori, roughly 15 min on flat streets, counts as walking home. The Shinjuku streets are flat, so no hills to add. Outside that radius you are relying on a train before about midnight or a taxi after it.

Ni-chome and the Shinjuku 3, 5 and 1-chome edges

This is where to sleep if the bars are the point. Imano Tokyo Hostel at Shinjuku 5-12-2 is the closest place in our listings. It's 351 m from QUEEN TOKYO, which is 5–7 min, and the walk is a straight line across Yasukuni-dori. It has dorms and a handful of private rooms, rated 4.0 from over 800 Google reviews, and Golden Gai is about as close in the other direction. Other mainstream hotels that sit on the edges of Ni-chome include Tokyu Stay Shinjuku (with washer-dryers in some rooms, useful for longer stays), APA Hotel Shinjuku-Gyoemmae (tiny but cheap singles) and Hotel Tateshina near Shinjuku-sanchome. None of these is gay-run and none is in our listings, so check the exact address on a map before you book. The Shinjuku-gyoemmae side, east of Naka-dori, is quiet at night. Naka-dori itself is still busy at 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays, and well lit. Noise in rooms is rarely a problem, because the bars are small, sealed boxes and the street crowd thins out after the last train.

Kabukicho

Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, which opened in 2023, holds two hotels. HOTEL GROOVE SHINJUKU, A PARKROYAL Hotel (4.5 from about 1,260 reviews) and BELLUSTAR TOKYO (lobby on the 45th floor) are both 878–884 m from QUEEN TOKYO, which is 14–16 min east along Yasukuni-dori. The basement of the same tower is ZEROTOKYO, where AGARTHA is held, so on party nights you can go home by lift. HOTEL THE HOTEL at Kabukicho 2-12-10 is 669 m from QUEEN TOKYO (10–12 min), but it sits in the love-hotel block and rates only 3.0. It suits a cheap night, not a holiday. Kabukicho isn't dangerous in the violent sense. The risk is touts steering you into rip-off bars. Walk with purpose, ignore anyone who approaches you in English, and never follow anyone upstairs.

Shimbashi and Ginza

Shimbashi has its own gay bar cluster around 2-chome to 4-chome, west of the station: Bubbles, ZAWA, Gay Bar GOTOKU, Bar NOMENOME and the mixed bar WaGaYa, plus two in Ginza 8-chome. Park Hotel Tokyo in the Shiodome Media Tower is 302 m from Bubbles (4–6 min) and 7–9 min from the 2-chome bars. The Imperial Hotel Tokyo is 438 m from Ginza Corvette (6–8 min) and 9–11 min from the Shimbashi bars. These are counter bars for local office workers, mostly in Japanese, with early weeknight crowds. The streets are completely safe and dead by 2 am. Ni-chome is about 25 min away. Take the Ginza line and change to the Marunouchi line at Akasaka-mitsuke, or take the JR Yamanote line to Shinjuku. After midnight you'll need a taxi back.

Ueno, Asakusa and the east side

Ueno is the older gay district. There are bear and middle-aged bars near the Iriya exit, including GREEN DAYZ and GENBA, and the city's biggest sauna cluster: 24 Kaikan Ueno, Ueno Cave and Ōban Kaikan Ueno. Asakusa has 24 Kaikan Asakusa and Ōban Asakusa behind Sensō-ji. The best-rated hotels in our listings on this side are ICI HOTEL Asakusabashi (4.7 from 1,200-plus reviews; 2,234 m to 24 Kaikan Asakusa, so 34–38 min on foot or two stops on the Toei Asakusa line) and Hotaku HOTEL Akihabara in Iwamotochō. Both are within 409–459 m of Gate In in Kanda Sakumachō, which is 6–9 min. Back streets here are sleepy and safe, and wholesale Asakusabashi is silent after 10 pm. If Ueno is your scene, sleep there and take the train to Ni-chome for one big night. Don't try to do it the other way round every night.

Further out

The Tokyo Station Hotel is a beautiful building above the Shinkansen platforms. The nearest bar in our listings, the gay-friendly Rokuten in Kanda, is 1,083 m away (17–19 min), and it isn't a gay bar. ulu Tokyo is a quiet riverside stay in Saga, Koto ward, 2,200 m from anything in our listings and about 30 min by metro from Ni-chome. Hotel Meguro Emperor is the 1970s castle love hotel, now sold as adults-only. It's a novelty night, 3,474 m from the nearest bar in our listings.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

We could not verify any gay-owned hotel in Tokyo in 2026. What actually exists is below.

    • HOTEL ADONIS (Minami-Aoyama 4-chome, near Gaienmae station). In 2026 it trades on booking sites as a male-only dormitory hostel. One listing calls it an LGBTQ-friendly men-only hostel, and another advertises a gay-friendly floor for gay men. Check-in runs 15:00–22:00 according to Trip.com, so a late flight means calling ahead. Ownership is unverified. Some listings place it near Ni-chome or Shibuya, but it's in neither, so treat the location claims sceptically.
    • Gay saunas with beds. In Japan the gay sauna works as a cheap men-only hotel. 24 Kaikan Ueno runs 24 hours on about ten floors in Kita-Ueno, roughly 8 min from JR Ueno, with private cabins on the upper floors. Spartacus lists entry at about ¥2,400–2,800, and staying overnight costs more (confirm at the desk). Jinya in Ikebukuro is reportedly in business since 1973 and is widely described as the most foreigner-friendly. 24 Kaikan also has a Shinjuku branch, which isn't in our listings, so check its location yourself. These saunas are men-only, nudity is normal on the bath floors, and they're cruising venues. Lockers are small, so leave big luggage at a station coin locker or a hotel.
    • Men-only capsule hotels. Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel (the name means "in front of the Shinjuku ward office", in Kabukicho) and Capsule Hotel Anshin Oyado near Shinjuku station are men-only, as many Japanese capsule hotels are. They're single-sex by custom, not gay venues, and the shared baths come with the same etiquette as any public bath. Gay guides have recommended both, but neither is in our listings. Confirm current policies before booking.
    • Clothing-optional. There is no clothing-optional hotel in Tokyo. Mainstream onsen and sento are nude and single-sex by design, and sexual behaviour in them is a criminal and social offence.

What has changed. Ueno Station Hostel Oriental I, sold for years as male-only, and POD SELECT HOTEL SHINJUKU, which was in a Ni-chome basement, have both been dropped from our listings. Some booking platforms still show the Ueno hostel as male-only in 2026, so check that it's open before you rely on it. City Hotel Lonestar, once the obvious "hotel in Ni-chome", only has old reviews we could find. Treat it as unverified.

    Booking rules that bite

    • Passport at check-in. Foreign guests without an address in Japan must show a passport, and the hotel copies it. Every person sleeping in the room is expected to be registered.
    • Visitors. Most business hotels, all capsule hotels and all hostels ban unregistered guests in rooms. Many have key-card lifts or front desks facing the lifts. Adding a second person later is usually charged as a full extra guest rather than a visitor fee, and some hotels refuse it once the room is sold as a single. The golden tip: if there's any chance of company, book a double for 2 guests from the start. It costs little more in Tokyo, and then the question never comes up.
    • Same-sex couples. Since 2018 the health ministry has told hotels, including love hotels, that refusing guests because of their sexual orientation or gender identity breaches the hotel law. Refusals at love hotels have still been reported in other cities. Mainstream hotels in central Tokyo don't blink.
    • Room sizes. A "double" in a Tokyo business hotel can be a 140 cm bed in 12–15 m². Two men of average Western build will want a twin or a "hollywood twin". Check the square metres and bed width, not just the room name.
    • Accommodation tax. Until 31 March 2027 Tokyo charges per person per night: nothing under ¥10,000, ¥100 from ¥10,000 to ¥14,999 and ¥200 from ¥15,000. That's roughly 1% or less. From 1 April 2027 Tokyo plans to switch to 3% of the room rate. Reports put the threshold at ¥13,000 a night, with private rentals included for the first time. It's paid at the hotel and often not shown in booking-site totals. If you prepay for a stay after March 2027, expect to settle any difference at the desk.
    • Service charges. Older luxury hotels often add a service charge, commonly 10–15%, on top of the 10% consumption tax. Check whether the price you see includes both.
    • Deposits and payment. Credit-card authorisation is normal at higher-end hotels. Small hostels and saunas may want cash or IC cards. Some sauna entry machines take cash only.
    • Cancellation. Japanese cancellation charges often start a few days before arrival, and many hotels charge 100% for a no-show. Non-refundable rates around Pride and Golden Week (29 April to 5 May) are rarely worth the saving.
    • Prices. We quote rates only where we've checked them. As a rough guide, men-only capsules and dorm beds are the cheapest beds in the walkable zone, and tower hotels in Kabukicho and the Marunouchi landmarks cost luxury money. Rates rise sharply during cherry-blossom season (late March to early April) and on Pride weekend. US$ hints in this guide assume roughly ¥150 to US$1.

The gay calendar and where to book for it

    Tokyo Pride: 5–6 June 2027

The organisers have confirmed the 2027 Pride Parade and Festival for Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June 2027, with the parade on Sunday 6 June. The festival is at Yoyogi Park Event Plaza and the outdoor stage, and the parade route is planned through Shibuya and Harajuku. The 2026 edition ran 6–7 June. The event was renamed and moved from late April to June in 2025, so older articles that send you to Golden Week are out of date. The organisers also run an official Pride Night party, held in Ni-chome in 2026. The 2027 night listing wasn't complete when we checked, so confirm it with Tokyo Rainbow Pride. We found no official partner hotels. Book Shinjuku if the nights matter more than the parade, since Yoyogi Park is a short ride from Shinjuku on the JR Yamanote line. Book 3–4 months ahead for Ni-chome-edge rooms, which are few and small.

    AGARTHA: 2027 date TBA

This big gay party at ZEROTOKYO, in the basement of Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, was last held on Saturday 6 June 2026, the Pride Saturday. The 2027 date had not been announced as of October 2026. If it follows Pride again, the two tower hotels are the obvious beds. Otherwise it's a 14–16 min walk from Ni-chome.

Rainbow Reel Tokyo: 2027 dates TBA

The LGBTQ+ film festival, running since 1992, last took place from 20 June to 12 July 2026. It's small and screenings are spread out, so it won't squeeze the hotel supply.

Sinland Tokyo Circuit Festival: 2027 not announced

The 2026 edition has just finished. It ran 2–4 October, with an underwear party on the Friday, the main night on Saturday at Midnight East in Shibuya and an early-morning after-party on Sunday. As of October 2026 the organisers hadn't published 2027 dates. Some listing sites already show early October 2027, but that's a guess. Sinland is a Shibuya event, so a Shibuya or Aoyama bed (including HOTEL ADONIS, 32–35 min on foot from Shibuya's Campy!bar) makes more sense than Shinjuku for that weekend.

Ni-chome also holds summer street events, traditionally in August. We couldn't confirm 2027 dates, so treat them as not announced as of October 2026.

    Getting back at 3 am

    • No all-night trains. Last trains leave around midnight to 00:30 depending on the line, and the first ones run from about 05:00. In Ni-chome people either leave by midnight or stay until first train.
    • Taxis. Tokyo's 23 wards have a flag fall of ¥500 (about US$3.30) for the first 1.096 km. A 20% late-night surcharge applies from 22:00 to 05:00. Taxis queue on Yasukuni-dori and Shinjuku-dori. From Ni-chome to the Kabukicho towers is the minimum fare or close to it. To Shimbashi, Ginza or Ueno, expect several thousand yen at night, and confirm the fare in the app. GO is the most widely used app and Uber summons ordinary licensed taxis. S.RIDE also works. Drivers rarely speak English, so show the hotel's Japanese address.
    • Haneda. Keikyu to Shinagawa, then JR to Shinjuku, takes about 45–60 min. Limousine buses run to Shinjuku. A taxi to Shinjuku is about ¥8,000–12,000 (US$55–80) with tolls and night surcharge. Confirm before you ride.
    • Narita. The Narita Express runs direct to Shinjuku in about 80–90 min, and the Keisei Skyliner reaches Ueno in about 45 min, which suits the Ueno and Asakusa saunas. A taxi is very expensive (about ¥25,000–30,000 or more, US$165–200), so time your flight for the trains.
    • Walking. Naka-dori, Yasukuni-dori and Shinjuku-dori are lit and busy. The Kabukicho streets around the Tokyu tower are the place to say no to touts. Shimbashi and Asakusabashi are empty but safe. Avoid Ueno Park after dark if you are on your own and not there on purpose.

    Health, safety and the law

    • Clinics. Shinjuku Higashiguchi Clinic in Shinjuku is the clinic most foreign gay visitors use for STI tests, PrEP and PEP. Check its site for current hours, English availability and its address before you go. Truvada was approved for PrEP in Japan in 2024. Supply for visitors is private and not insurance-covered, so bring your own PrEP. PEP has to be started within 72 hours, so go to a specialist clinic straight away rather than waiting at a general A&E. The community centre akta in Ni-chome hands out HIV information and condoms.
    • Local groups. Stonewall Japan is the main English-language network. Marriage For All Japan runs the marriage lawsuits.
    • Apps. Meet first in a Ni-chome bar, not at the hotel door. Keep cash and passport in the room safe. If you're bringing someone back, book the room for 2 guests in advance. We found no dated 2025–2026 reports of robberies targeting gay visitors when we checked, but that doesn't mean there were none. The documented local risk is overpriced or spiked drinks in tout-run bars in Kabukicho and Roppongi, not the gay bars themselves.
    • Drugs. Japan's drug laws are among the strictest anywhere. Since December 2024, cannabis use is itself a crime, and CBD products with THC traces can get you arrested. Poppers are a designated controlled substance, so possession and import are illegal. Some common Western prescriptions, especially ADHD stimulants, need advance import paperwork. Chemsex arrests make the news, and foreigners face detention and deportation.
    • Smoking. Central wards ban smoking on the street. Chiyoda (Akihabara, Marunouchi) issues on-the-spot fines. Use the marked smoking areas. Non-smoking hotel rooms carry a cleaning charge set out in the house rules.
    • The law. Same-sex relations are legal. Same-sex marriage isn't legal in Japan. Tokyo has offered a partnership certificate system since November 2022, but it gives visitors nothing practical. Public indecency is a crime, and parks that are known for cruising, Ueno Park included, are patrolled. Keep it inside licensed saunas.

    Three picks

    • Budget: Imano Tokyo Hostel. It's 5–7 min from Naka-dori, the closest bed in our listings, and it's cheap enough that missing the last train never matters. Book a private room if you want company.
    • Mid-range: HOTEL GROOVE SHINJUKU. It's a modern room that's walkable to Ni-chome (14–16 min) and right above ZEROTOKYO. It's an international chain brand, and booking it for 2 guests is simple.
    • Splurge: BELLUSTAR TOKYO. It's the only true luxury hotel within walking distance of Ni-chome, with a 45th-floor lobby and the AGARTHA dance floor in the basement. The Imperial is the classic choice, but it puts you near Shimbashi's bars and needs a taxi home from Shinjuku.
