About this place The Hill (Legislative Grounds)

"The Hill" — the riverbank of the Manitoba Legislative Building grounds sloping down to the Red River — is Winnipeg's oldest and most storied gay cruising ground, used since at least the 1950s and documented in local queer-history projects. After dark it has long been an informal meeting place for men. Important safety note: the area has a serious history of anti-gay violence, including homophobic assaults and the 1991 murder of a man who cruised here, as well as periods of heavy police surveillance. Activity today is much reduced in the app era. If you visit, go with awareness, stay in view of others, avoid isolated spots after dark, and know that public sexual activity is illegal in Canada. This entry documents a real, historically significant location — not an endorsement to take risks.
