About This Event
SXSW is not a queer event. It is Austin's giant March week of conferences, film, TV and music showcases, and in 2025 the organizers counted 309,300 attendees. It sits on a gay travel site because the week carries a real layer of LGBTQ+ programming that is easy to miss inside the main schedule: queer films in the festival lineup, queer acts on the music showcases, and a run of parties organized by local groups rather than by SXSW itself.
Most of the official programme sits behind an expensive badge. The queer side is easier to reach. The Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce publishes an LGBTQ+ guide to the week and throws the Big Queer Kickoff Party; the 13th edition was on 13 March 2026 at Rain on 4th, headlined by Bebe Zahara Benet, the first winner of RuPaul's Drag Race. Badge holders get priority, but people without a badge can get in too. The 2026 guide also listed a Tacos & Tiaras drag lunch with the aGLIFF film festival, LGBTQ+ business talks, daily meetups and queer titles in the film programme such as Leviticus and The Dads.
Practically, this is Austin's most expensive hotel week of the year. The 2026 edition was cut from nine days to seven, and Visit Austin data reported by Axios showed nearly 20% fewer hotel rooms sold. With the convention center closed for rebuilding, events are spread across downtown venues, so pick a hotel you can walk from. If you only want the queer nights, the Chamber party and the gay bars along West 4th Street work without a badge.
The last edition ran 12 to 18 March 2026. SXSW has officially announced 2027 for 13 to 21 March, with SXSW EDU on 13 to 16 March and the main conferences and festivals on 15 to 21 March. The Chamber's queer programme is usually published only a few weeks before.
