About this place Granville Anvil

Granville Anvil is a gay bar on Chicago's Far North Side, right by Loyola University, and it's blessedly unpretentious. The place feels like a 1950s basement, not your typical sleek modern gay bar, and that's precisely why locals like it. Expect real neighborhood vibes and a friendly crowd. Chicago's gay scene sprawls across the city, from pulsating dance clubs to quiet lounges. Granville Anvil stakes its claim as a casual, welcoming spot that values comfort and authenticity over flash. If you want a drink without any fuss, a chat with regulars, and a glimpse into a more grassroots side of the city's LGBTQ+ community, this is it. The outdoor beer garden is a big draw, especially in Chicago's warmer months. It's a fine place to have a drink outside and just absorb the neighborhood. If you're exploring the North Side or just a local after a reliable haunt, Granville Anvil is an easygoing alternative to bigger clubs, and a good fit for anyone who prefers personality to a trendy scene.

Decided not to be a sad sack alone by myself on Christmas Eve and made my second visit here last night. My first time back in November was perfectly nice, very quiet, good drinks, just a few groups chatting idly. But last night the place was decked out to the nines in all manner of fabulous Christmas decor—including Brandon the bartender in a reindeer onesie—and packed with an array of patrons bringing some really great energy. The 3 gin and tonics and mystery peppermint shot Brandon made me were not only excellent, but lasted me well until 4 am, all for a fraction of what it would have cost at other bars. Really was just a lovely few hours I spent here, especially the conversation. It's very refreshing to go to a bar where you can actually hear people and make real connections rather than shouting at each other. Altogether a great little spot, truly a hidden gem to have just a train stop away, and I will definitely be back!

Service was abysmal. Upon walk-in was asked “what do you want”. When I asked for a beer list the bartender pretty much screamed “I have no list just tell me what you want”. A few more other things too, but he was the most hostile person in customer service I’ve ever met. We left and refused to give the establishment a dime. Service 0/10. This was a Sunday at noon before a mosaic class trying to get a quick beer
