Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center

Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center at 290 W Nine Mile Road in Ferndale has been the institutional anchor of the Detroit metro's LGBTQ+ community since 1989. The facility is one of the most comprehensive LGBTQ+ community centres in the Midwest — a large building on Ferndale's Nine Mile Road that houses social services, individual and group mental health counselling, HIV/AIDS support and testing, youth and senior programming, a resource library, community meeting rooms, and a full calendar of community events. Affirmations has been a constant in the Detroit metro's gay geography through the AIDS crisis, the economic devastation of the 2000s, the city's bankruptcy, and the current revival period. Its presence on Nine Mile Road, two storefronts down from Rosie O'Grady's, makes it literally embedded in the neighbourhood that serves as the metro's primary gay district. The Centre's mental health services are particularly notable — it operates a sliding-scale counselling programme that has served tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ people across southeast Michigan. Affirmations is the most visible expression of the seriousness with which Michigan's LGBTQ+ community has built its own institutional infrastructure over 35 years.
