Glendale, California: An LGBTQ+ Traveler's Guide

Glendale is a city of roughly 188,000 people in Los Angeles County, tucked between the Verdugo Mountains and the Los Angeles River about eight miles north of downtown LA. It sits right beside the city's eastside queer hubs — Silver Lake, Los Feliz and Atwater Village are a ten-minute drive south — and a short hop from Burbank, Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley. Honestly, Glendale itself does not have a gay bar, club or bathhouse. The good news is how close the action is. A ten- to fifteen-minute drive reaches the eastside LA gay circuit: Akbar in Silver Lake (an iconic neighborhood queer bar since 1996) and Hi Tops in Los Feliz (a gay sports bar) are the nearest anchors, with more bars and clubs clustered along Sunset Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue. West Hollywood — the region's primary gay district, packed with bars, clubs and cafes along Santa Monica Boulevard — is about thirty minutes southwest. North Hollywood, just over the hill, adds Latino gay nightlife. Rideshare is the easiest way to reach any of these after a night out.

Pride and Community Events

Glendale's own Pride, organized by GlendaleOUT, takes place in late June and centers on downtown Glendale; a companion Queer Family Picnic in the park rounds out the local calendar. The Glendale Library, Arts & Culture department also runs LGBTQ+ programming during Pride Month. Moonlight Rollerway, the classic Glendale roller rink, hosts recurring LGBTQ+ skate nights. For the big celebration, most residents also attend LA Pride (Hollywood, June) and WeHo Pride, both a short drive away.

Where to Stay

Glendale offers a solid range of mid-range and budget hotels, generally more affordable than comparable rooms in West Hollywood or Hollywood, while keeping you within easy reach of the eastside scene and the studios of Burbank. Most properties cluster near Brand Boulevard and the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways. None market themselves as specifically gay, but California law protects against discrimination in public accommodations and the city's hotels are used to a diverse, international clientele. Travelers who want to walk to gay nightlife often base themselves in West Hollywood instead and treat Glendale as a quieter, cheaper alternative.

Getting Around

Like most of Los Angeles County, Glendale is car-centric. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is widely available and is the practical way to reach bars in Silver Lake, Los Feliz or West Hollywood. Metro bus lines connect Glendale to Hollywood and downtown LA, and the city is unusually close to two airports: Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is about ten minutes away, while Los Angeles International (LAX) is roughly forty-five minutes by car.

As anywhere, use normal urban awareness late at night and rely on rideshare when traveling to and from nightlife in neighboring areas.

Day Trips and Beyond

Glendale's central location makes it a handy launchpad. Griffith Park and its observatory sit just across the river; Pasadena, Burbank's studios, and the beaches of Santa Monica and Malibu — including the historic gay section of Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades — are all within a reasonable drive. Downtown Los Angeles, with its own bars and the Arts District, is about fifteen minutes south.
