Fantasy Fest is Key West's biggest party, a ten-day October bash that started in 1979. It turns the island into a costume carnival, with body paint everywhere and street parties that don't hold back.
The festival pulls in over 75,000 people, more than tripling the island's usual 25,000 residents. Every hotel, guesthouse, and rental fills up.
LGBTQ+ folks have always been a big part of Fantasy Fest. The costumes, the body paint, the public nudity, the street party vibe, and the open sexual freedom make it a natural fit for gay travelers, even if it attracts all kinds of partiers.
During the day, check out the Pretenders in Paradise costume competition. On the final Saturday, the Masquerade March street parade brings 75,000 spectators to Duval Street. You'll see the Painted Ladies, covered in body paint, walking through Old Town — that's the image everyone remembers from Fantasy Fest.
You'll need to book your place to stay eight to ten months ahead. It's the hardest week to get a room in Key West.
