About this place Los Angeles LGBT Center

The Los Angeles LGBT Center is the largest LGBTQ+ organisation in the world by budget, staff, and range of services — a full-scale social services and community institution that operates healthcare clinics, youth and senior housing, legal services, mental health services, cultural programming, and advocacy from its Hollywood campus. Founded in 1969, in the same year as the Stonewall uprising, the Center has grown from a volunteer-run crisis hotline to an organisation with an annual budget exceeding $140 million and a staff of over 700, serving more than 40,000 individuals annually. The Schrader Boulevard campus operates as a small city within the city: the main building houses clinics, offices, and community spaces, while adjacent buildings provide housing for homeless LGBTQ+ youth and seniors. The Center's healthcare division is one of the largest LGBTQ+-specific healthcare providers in the United States, with services including HIV/AIDS care, primary care, mental health, and substance use treatment. The cultural and arts programming operates year-round, including the Village at Ed Gould Plaza which hosts performances, exhibitions, and community events. For visitors, the Center represents the institutional infrastructure that makes Los Angeles's LGBTQ+ community function at a scale that communities in smaller cities cannot achieve. The building is open to visitors and the on-site café and public spaces are accessible without appointment.

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of communication and attention I received. During my appointment, I clearly explained that my insurance currently covers 100% of the surgery, that the surgeon has already been selected, and that the surgeon only needs a final letter from the doctor before the procedure can be scheduled. The surgery could take place within approximately four months. Despite this, the doctor did not seem to listen and said the letter would be sent to the insurance company instead of directly to the surgeon. I immediately clarified where it needed to be sent, but the issue still has not been resolved. The insurer wont do anything with the letter... is the surgeon who requires it. Since then, I have called repeatedly to the center trying to clarify, sometimes three times per week, and nobody answers or returns my calls. My insurance is about to change, so this delay could cause me to lose a major and time-sensitive opportunity to receive medically necessary care. This is not a minor administrative inconvenience. Delays and poor communication can have serious consequences for patients. I expected an organization serving the LGBTQ+ community to show more care, urgency, and understanding. I need someone to listen, return my calls, and send the required letter to the correct surgeon before it is too late.
