About this place Therapy NYC

Therapy NYC on West 52nd Street occupies a specific and valuable niche in the Hell's Kitchen gay scene: it is a proper show bar, in the tradition of New York cabaret, where the entertainment is the point and the drinks are designed to accompany it rather than the other way around. The venue runs a full programme of performers: Broadway cast members doing solo shows between productions, cabaret artists with established followings, drag performers at the more theatrical end of the form, comedy nights, and themed performance evenings. The cocktail programme is more carefully considered than the average gay bar and reflects the fact that the clientele comes to sit and watch rather than to dance and cruise. Therapy occupies a position between the piano bar tradition (The Monster, Julius') and the entertainment megavenue (Industry) — more polished than the former, more intimate and performance-focused than the latter. For visitors interested in the cabaret and theatrical side of New York gay culture, it is the essential stop in Hell's Kitchen.

I left this experience feeling taken advantage of and deeply disappointed. When I switched health insurance, no one from the company explained what my new out-of-pocket costs would be. As a result, I continued attending sessions under the assumption that my coverage wouldn’t be much that much different (as I opted for a better plan when choosing my new insurance), only to later discover that I was responsible for multiple sessions totaling approximately $800. What makes this especially upsetting is that many of our therapy sessions focused on my financial stress and anxiety. Although there was a payment plan. to be hit with an unexpected bill of that size felt incredibly harmful and contradictory to the support I was seeking. Transparency about insurance coverage and costs is a basic responsibility, particularly in mental health care, where patients are often in vulnerable situations. Unfortunately, this experience reinforced a concern I have about the mental health industry: that patient well-being can sometimes take a back seat to billing and revenue. I hope this review encourages the company to improve its communication practices and prioritize patients over transactions.

Love the therapists here! Their offices are modern, beautifully designed, and genuinely make a difference. The space feels comfortable and welcoming, which makes going there so much easier. The therapists are excellent: professional, highly skilled, and truly supportive.

I had a great experience with Cormac, who specialized in exactly the things I needed help with. He provided perspective, resources and conversation that was incredibly helpful to me!

The therapy I received undoubtedly changed my life for the better. Ashley Bethea was my therapist and I would highly recommend her. When I first started, I had an incredibly difficult time being vulnerable and understanding and articulating my emotions. Ashley was amazing at helping me open up and recognize and process emotions in a way I was never able to before. Her observations, insights, and questions were always insightful and nuanced, and she helped me understand and find myself when I thought I would feel lost forever. I am so grateful that I had Ashley as my therapist and I would have kept seeing her if I didn't move out of state! myTherapyNYC is also a great practice overall. Communication was always prompt, clear, and professional, their in-person location was warm, convenient, and private, and their flexibility with in-person and online sessions was great.
