Frameline: San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival

Frameline is the San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival, founded in 1977 and widely described as the longest-running queer film festival. It runs for 11 days in the second half of June, timed so its last weekend lands on San Francisco Pride, and the Castro Theatre is its home base.
It is a ticketed festival. You buy single screenings or passes, and the big opening, centerpiece and closing nights sell out first. Most screenings are at the Castro, the Roxie and the Vogue, with satellite venues in Berkeley and Oakland. Shorts programs and documentaries are where much of the best work is, and many screenings include Q&As with the filmmakers. Members get early booking, which matters for the Castro shows. If you're in town for Pride, pairing a few evening screenings with the parade weekend is easy, since the Castro venues are a walk from the neighborhood bars.
Frameline is also a year-round nonprofit that distributes queer films to schools and community groups and funds new work through its completion fund.
Frameline says the festival draws about 50,000 attendees a year, and that Frameline50 welcomed 50,000 people plus more than 600 filmmakers and industry guests. The 50th edition ran 17 to 27 June 2026 with more than 140 films from 35 countries. It opened at the Castro with D'Arcy Drollinger's Lady Champagne, used Byrdie O'Connor's Barbara Hammer documentary Barbara Forever as its centerpiece and closed with Jane Schoenbrun's Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma; Colman Domingo was honored.
Frameline51 is officially set for 16 to 26 June 2027 in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland. The program and ticket on-sale dates come later, usually in spring, so watch for member presale.
