About this place Scala's Bistro

Scala's Bistro is a gay-friendly restaurant located at 432 Powell Street, just a block from Union Square in San Francisco. Set adjacent to the historic Sir Francis Drake Hotel, this venue brings European elegance to the heart of the city with its thoughtfully designed interior that draws inspiration from classic Parisian bistros. The space itself is a highlight, featuring high ceilings with original elaborate design work, richly colored floor tiles, and décor inspired by Monet's kitchen. White linen tablecloths, gilt mirrors, and original murals in rich tobacco tones create an atmosphere that feels both refined and welcoming. The semi-open kitchen adds to the authentic bistro experience, letting diners connect with the culinary action as their meals are prepared. Whether you're visiting San Francisco for a special occasion or looking for a comfortable spot to enjoy a meal in a welcoming environment, Scala's Bistro offers the kind of classic restaurant experience that appeals to LGBTQ+ travelers seeking quality dining in an inclusive setting. The combination of Old World charm and a genuinely comfortable atmosphere makes it a solid choice for those exploring the city's dining scene near one of its most popular neighborhoods.

I think anyone who usually likes fish will enjoy the salmon! The linguine pasta is super delicious. Both the noodles and the sauce are the best 👍

When we return to a restaurant where our experience was exceeded, there is a sense of curiosity. Will it be as good as I remembered? Will it be better? Will my friend like it? It was as great as I remembered it!! Try the Ora King Salmon.

We visited Scala’s in the summer of 2018 when we attended a wedding. To this day, my daughter wants to go back and just dine at Scala’s. She was 14 years old at the time and she loved-loved-loved the ravioli in the red and white sauce. This is the best Italian restaurant! Highly recommended for the food, the ambiance, and the top notch service! We hope to return soon.

My boyfriend and I were in town visiting for a friends birthday. It was both our first time in San Francisco and we were in the mood for some Italian food. He called Scalas and it was a short walk around the block. We were so impressed with the service and it was a very romantic candlelit dinner. This was last December. I’m so sad to see that this place is temporarily closed. Hopefully it opens again soon.
