Capital Pride
About This Event
Capital Pride began in 1975 as a one-day block party on 20th Street NW in Dupont Circle, organized by Deacon Maccubbin of the Lambda Rising bookstore. Since 2008 it has been produced by the Capital Pride Alliance. For more than a decade it has run on the second weekend of June, with a Saturday parade and a Sunday street festival on Pennsylvania Avenue within sight of the Capitol.
In 2025 the city hosted WorldPride from 17 May to 8 June, marking 50 years of Pride in DC. Destination DC estimated 1.2 million attendees and $310.7 million in economic impact. Those numbers fell well short of forecasts of 2 to 3 million visitors and nearly $800 million, and hotel occupancy was 5% lower than the same week in 2024. Local reporting blamed a drop in foreign visitors under the new federal administration, although that is an inference from observers rather than something measured. For 2026, organizers framed the event as carrying WorldPride's legacy into protest.
The parade is free. In 2026 it stepped off at 3pm from 14th and T Streets NW and ran down 14th Street toward Pennsylvania Avenue. The festival and concert took over Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 3rd and 7th Streets the next day. June in Washington is hot and humid, so bring water. Metro is the easiest way in, and the bars of Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and U Street carry the nights.
The 2026 edition moved a week later than usual, to 20 and 21 June, with Pride events running from 12 June. Organizers cited the city's capacity during America 250 preparations, and reporting also linked the move to a White House UFC event on 14 June. The theme was 'Exist. Resist. Have the Audacity!', and the grand marshals were David Archuleta and Monroe Alise. The Washington Blade reported tens of thousands of people over the weekend, and we found no official count. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced when we checked.
