Gay Montpellier: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and French and international sources from 2023–2026 · Report a change

Seven in the evening on Place du Marché aux Fleurs. The plane trees throw shade over a tiny square of café tables, someone orders a second pastis, and two men at the next table are arguing about whether to go on to Saint-Roch or call it a night. The honest summary: Montpellier is a relaxed, student-heavy city with a small, spread-out gay scene. There is no gay street and no big gay club any more. What it does have is a handful of good bars, a queer bar that the lesbian crowd built, two busy gay saunas, an active Pride association, and some of the best gay and naturist beaches in France within half an hour of the centre.

Legal in one line: France has had same-sex marriage and joint adoption since May 2013, and the country's first same-sex wedding took place at Montpellier's town hall on 29 May 2013, when Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau married. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal, and in the city centre holding hands draws little attention.

Where the scene is

Almost everything is in or just outside the Écusson, the medieval old town between Place de la Comédie and the Peyrou. Within it, the places to know are Place du Marché aux Fleurs, Rue des Écoles-Laïques and the Saint-Roch side near the station. Two venues sit outside: Madrediosa in Beaux-Arts, ten minutes' walk north, and Koncept Sauna on Avenue de Lodève, in Figuerolles just west of the old town. It's all walkable, and the tram covers the rest.

Bars

Café de la Mer · 5 Place du Marché aux Fleurs

The long-running first stop of gay Montpellier and the bar most guides name first (Queer in the World, misterb&b). It is a terrace café-bar more than a party bar: coffee by day, drinks from the apéro hour, a mixed but largely gay crowd in the evening. Service gets slow when the square is full. Check its Facebook page for current hours.

Le Coxx · 5 Rue Jules Latreilhe, Saint-Roch

The busiest gay bar in town now. It opened after the Villa Rouge club closed in 2017 (Le Bonbon), and Travel Gay lists it as open daily from 18:00 to 01:00. Two levels with stone walls, a terrace, weekend DJ sets and drag-hosted parties on its events calendar (Halloween 2026 is hosted by Miss Victoire), and karaoke about twice a month. The Linktree on its profile has the week's programme.

Madrediosa · 5 Rue Belmont, Beaux-Arts

A queer bar opened during the Covid years by Audrey Simon and Sabrina L'Hermitte, listed by Le Fooding and Privateaser as Montpellier's lesbian and queer bar. Everyone in the community drinks here, though. DJ sets, drag nights, readings and the odd flash-tattoo evening, all announced on Instagram. Google lists it as open Tuesday to Saturday from 18:00, until 01:00 from Thursday.

Le Moom · 3 Rue Collot, by Place Jean-Jaurès

The city's late-night gay club, small and dark, with house and tech music until the early hours (Queer in the World called it the last gay club left). Travel Gay updated its hours in January 2026, but a sports pub called Le Circus is also listed at the same address, so we couldn't confirm how it runs today. Call +33 6 84 96 34 15 or check its social media before going late.

Also worth knowing

    • Le Marvelous (3 Rue Saint-Ravy): gay-run bar-restaurant with a superhero theme, open since 2014; lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday.
    • HypnoBar (4 Rue des Trésoriers de la Bourse): a small karaoke and DJ bar that Privateaser files under gay-friendly. It is not a gay bar, but it's a relaxed place to drink.
    • Le Mercury (26 Rue des Écoles-Laïques): listed as a queer bar by misterb&b and Privateaser, but Google showed it as temporarily closed when we checked in October 2026, so we haven't listed it.
    • UP (5 Rue de Girone) is listed by one guide as a mixed LGBTQ+ DJ bar. We couldn't confirm it anywhere else.

    Parties and drag

With no big gay club left, nights out mostly mean parties in other venues. The events listed for autumn 2026 include Folle de Rage nights at Halle Tropisme and the Rockstore, Overqueer queer techno at Mélomane Club, a "Remember Villa Rouge" night for the old crowd, and the K-waï queer collective at Halle Tropisme. Drag Race France Live brings its tour to Montpellier on 10 November 2026. The city's events page pulls these in from the venues and from agendas such as Qluvis.

    Saunas

Koncept Sauna · 10 bis Avenue de Lodève

The bigger of the two: about 350 m² on two levels, with a jacuzzi, hammam, darkroom and cabins, according to its own site and misterb&b. Open daily 13:00 to 01:00, free for under-22s, with themed nights through the week (Hot Monday, bears, young men's nights, naturist evenings). Tuesday and Friday are mixed nights open to couples, so check the agenda if you want men only.

ONE Sauna · 1 Rue de la Victoire de la Marne

Men only and "100% gay", open seven days a week since 2012 (its own site). Three floors, entry around €10 to €13, free for under-22s, naturist night on Wednesday and students' night on Thursday (Travel Gay, misterb&b). It closes early on most days (listed 20:30) and runs until midnight on Wednesday and Thursday.

    Cruising

There is no gay cruise bar open in Montpellier that we could confirm in 2026. Le Chantier closed, and the Rex near the station now calls itself an adult venue with mixed and couples' nights rather than a gay club. Older guides and our own listing mention the Bois de Montmaur, but it's an ordinary public park and we found no current independent source for it. Sex in public is an offence in France. The saunas and the apps are the legal options.

    Beaches

This is where Montpellier beats most French cities. Naturism is allowed on the designated naturist stretches; sex in public is not, and the dunes are protected everywhere.

    • Plage de Maguelone, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, about 15 km south: a naturist beach since the 1960s, below the old cathedral, often with a rainbow flag on the gay section (misterb&b, Queer in the World). The nearest one, and the local favourite.
    • Plage du Grand Travers, between Carnon and La Grande-Motte, about 20 km: a long undeveloped beach that both guides list. It's a family beach for most of its length.
    • L'Espiguette, Le Grau-du-Roi, about 40 km: miles of dunes with separate naturist and gay areas a long walk from the car parks.
    • Cap d'Agde naturist village, about an hour away: a big general naturist resort with an entry fee; gay men use the eastern end of the beach towards Marseillan.
    • Les Aresquiers (Frontignan / Vic-la-Gardiole) is also listed by both guides as clothing-optional, but we don't have a page for it yet.

Palavas-les-Flots is the closest beach town, but no gay guide we found lists a gay section there.

    Pride: the Marche des Fiertés

Montpellier Pride is run by the association Fierté Montpellier Pride, which started in 1995 as LGP Montpellier. It takes place over a weekend in June. In 2026 it ran on 19 and 20 June, under the slogan "Touche pas à ma Pride": talks and apéros on Friday, then an associations' village on the Esplanade du Peyrou and the march through the centre on Saturday afternoon (city tourist office). Local listings disagree on the edition number, and we found no official crowd count. The 2027 date had not been announced at the time of writing.

    Community and health

    • Fierté Montpellier Pride / Maison des LGBT, 21 Boulevard Pasteur: drop-in sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and a weekly session for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. The easiest way in if you're new in town.
    • AIDES – Le Spot, 16 Boulevard d'Orient: free rapid HIV and hepatitis tests, PrEP support and condoms. Call ahead, as some sessions are by appointment.
    • Fondation Le Refuge: the national foundation for young LGBTQ+ people rejected by their families, founded in Montpellier in 2003 and still headquartered here. It isn't a drop-in centre; contact it through its website or helpline.

    Where to stay

Stay in or next to the Écusson and you can walk to everything. Central options include Hôtel du Palais and Baudon de Mauny in the old town, the Grand Hôtel du Midi on Boulevard Victor Hugo, and Hôtel Mistral Comédie near the station. None of them is a gay hotel; they're simply well placed. The full list is on the hotels page.

Closed or changed (gone but still Googled)

    • La Villa Rouge, the big gay club for two decades, closed in 2017. The name lives on in "Remember Villa Rouge" parties.
    • Heaven Bar (Rue Delpech) closed in October 2017.
    • Le Cubix, Wine Note Bar, Le Chantier cruise club, Sauna Le 36 and Boxer Shop had all closed by the end of 2023 (Queer in the World).
    • Sauna de la Gare and the Rex Club sauna on Avenue du Pont Juvénal are listed as closed by Travel Gay and misterb&b.
    • L'Opéra / Opera Club (Rue d'Alger) shows as permanently closed on Google.
    • Le Diagonal is Montpellier's arthouse cinema chain, not a gay club, whatever some websites say. We also found no trace of a sauna called "Plein Sud" or "Aquarius" on Rue de la Carbonnerie, or of bars called "L'Azyl" and "Le Soho" on Rue Saint-Firmin and Rue Foch.

    Practical tips

    • Timing: the main bars close at 01:00, so the parties are where the late night happens. Montpellier is a university city, and the listings are fuller in term time than in August.
    • Getting there: Montpellier-Méditerranée airport (MPL) is about 8 km south-east, linked to the city by shuttle bus and taxi. TGVs from Paris take about three and a half hours.
    • Getting around: the old centre is pedestrian, and the tram network covers the rest of the city. For the beaches you will want a car or a bike in practice.
    • Heat: July and August are hot. Go to the beach early and drink in the evening.

    A few words in French

    • Un demi, s'il vous plaît: a small draught beer, please.
    • C'est où, la soirée ce soir ?: where's the party tonight?
    • La Marche des Fiertés: the Pride march.
    • Plage naturiste: naturist beach.

FAQ

Is there a gay district in Montpellier?

Not a formal one. The bars are spread around the Écusson old town, mainly near Place du Marché aux Fleurs and in Saint-Roch, with Madrediosa just north in Beaux-Arts.

Is there still a gay club in Montpellier?

Not a big one. La Villa Rouge closed in 2017. Le Moom is the small late-night option (check it's open), and the rest of the clubbing happens at queer parties in venues like Halle Tropisme and the Rockstore.

How many gay saunas are there?

Two that we could confirm in 2026: Koncept Sauna on Avenue de Lodève and ONE Sauna near the station. Both let under-22s in free.

Which beach is the gay beach?

The nearest is Maguelone, a naturist beach about 15 km south. Le Grand Travers, L'Espiguette and the eastern end of Cap d'Agde are the other ones the guides name.

When is Montpellier Pride?

Every June. In 2026 the march was on Saturday 20 June from the Esplanade du Peyrou. The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked.

Is Montpellier safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?

Yes, by any reasonable measure. The usual big-city care applies late at night, and if anything goes wrong the Maison des LGBT on Boulevard Pasteur can point you to help.
