Best Gay Bars & Clubs in Melbourne

Melbourne’s gay bar scene splits into two distinct zones: Commercial Road in Prahran and South Yarra, the city’s established gay strip, and the inner-north suburbs of Fitzroy and Collingwood, where a younger, more arts-oriented gay drinking culture has taken hold over the past two decades.

Commercial Road

Commercial Road in Prahran still has the most gay-specific venues in Melbourne. Some bars here have been open since the 1980s. The street is packed with clubs, bars, saunas, and shops — you know immediately it’s a gay district. Some places are big and nationally known; others are smaller, local spots. It’s got that polished South Yarra look, a contrast to the rougher inner-north vibe.

Take the tram down Chapel Street to Commercial Road from the CBD. South Yarra station (Glen Waverley and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines) is a short walk away.

Fitzroy and Collingwood

The inner-north bars with a strong gay following are usually independent spots, not places explicitly marketed as gay. Several on Smith Street, Johnston Street, and nearby streets consistently draw a mixed LGBTQ+ crowd without being formal gay bars. This just reflects the different culture of these neighborhoods — less about explicit branding, more integrated into the general bar scene.

That’s not a criticism. The Fitzroy and Collingwood options are often more interesting bar experiences than some of the more formally gay venues to the south. The trade-off is they’re less predictably gay on any given night.

Midsumma

During Midsumma Festival (late January to mid-February), Melbourne’s gay bars really ramp up their programming. Expect special events, performances, themed nights, and visiting acts. Many of the festival’s smaller events happen in bars across both the south and north. This is when the city’s bar scene is at its busiest.

Melbourne’s tram network makes getting between Commercial Road and the inner north easy without a car. The 78 and 79 trams run along Chapel Street and connect to Commercial Road. Inner-north venues are served by the 86 (Smith Street) and 96 (Brunswick Street) trams.

Last call in Melbourne is usually 3 am with the right license, though many places close earlier on weeknights. Always check with individual venues.
