About this place Schwules Museum

The Schwules Museum, in Berlin’s Tiergarten, is a cultural institution documenting LGBTQ+ history and experiences.

Founded in the mid-1980s by three gay students, the museum has grown into an archive of materials spanning more than two centuries. It's one of the few places in the world dedicated entirely to preserving and exploring homosexuality in all its forms.

The museum uses multiple spaces for different kinds of engagement. The main exhibition space shows temporary exhibitions with works by artists, philosophers, historians, and cultural commentators. These often give a new angle on LGBTQ+ identity, history, and artistic expression. Beyond the galleries, the museum keeps extensive archives and a library, open for both casual browsing and serious research.

You'll find it at 70-73 Lützowstraße, in a part of Berlin with plenty of cultural spots. The atmosphere is thoughtful, educational, and meant to get you thinking about the stories and experiences it holds. The museum treats LGBTQ+ history with the seriousness and respect it deserves, but it’s still welcoming to everyone. Check schwulesmuseum.de for current exhibitions and visiting hours.

A gorgeously curated museum!! Their exhibits are comprehensive, informative, beautiful and impressive. They do a brilliant job representing and highlighting different perspectives and stories. Berlin is drenched in queerness! It’s so important that this exists… and that people visit!! The staff is helpful and personable and made me feel welcome! Most is in German, plenty is translated into English. Cafe and mini gift shop on-site.

There's also a section introducing the history of the movement regarding homosexuality, but the main attraction is the special exhibition area.
