About this place Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus

Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus, a bookstore on Dorotheenstraße in central Berlin, opened in 1997. It was one of the first big things to happen in the neighborhood after the Wall fell. The place has five floors and sells books, CDs, and DVDs, with a whole section just for English-language titles. It’s useful if you’re visiting or live here and speak English. This isn’t just a store. They host readings, book signings, and music events most evenings, drawing in Berlin’s creative types. You can lose hours here, just looking around and taking it all in. The mix of media and all the events show a belief that books and music are important for a community. While Dussmann is huge and has everything, it’s not the only game in town. Berlin also has smaller, independent gay bookshops, like Prinz Eisenherz Buchladen, each with its own vibe and specialties. But for sheer volume and a steady schedule of cultural events, Dussmann’s a safe bet. It’s the kind of big, inclusive cultural spot that helps define Berlin’s arts scene.

An absolute favorite spot in Berlin. A huge variety of wonderful books, some hand-signed by the authors, a great music section with rare LPs, a nice café, opening hours until midnight, and a pleasant atmosphere that invites you to relax and browse. And there are always inspiring live events too.
