About this place Hotel Fresena

Hotel Fresena is a well-regarded independently run hotel near the Aussenalster — Hamburg's central lake — in the Rotherbaum district. The hotel has developed a strong reputation with LGBTQ+ travellers through its explicitly welcoming approach, knowledgeable staff (able to guide guests through Hamburg's gay scene), and positioning between the gay district (15 minutes by U-Bahn) and the city's museums, opera, and cultural infrastructure. The rooms are individually furnished rather than chain-standard, and the breakfast is Hamburg-quality (the city takes its breakfasts seriously). The location near the Uni Hamburg gives it a youthful neighbourhood character while the proximity to the Alster provides the kind of morning walks that are among the better urban experiences in northern Germany. For LGBTQ+ visitors to Hamburg who want to be centrally located rather than embedded in St Georg specifically, Fresena is the most frequently recommended option.

Hotel Fresena impresses with its quiet location and very friendly, personal service. We would gladly book there again.

Poor value for money. Friendly staff who proactively approach guests and are helpful. We received a jar of jam as a parting gift. Great location. While there is some traffic noise at night, it's not disturbingly loud. Breakfast was surprisingly good for the size of the hotel. The hotel, rooms, and furniture are of a very low standard and in poor condition. The mattress was worn out, the furniture was dilapidated, and all the flooring needed replacing. I was somewhat disgusted by the floor. The economy room is so small and cramped that you can barely move around or put anything down. You can hear everything that happens in the hallway. There are five hotels housed in the Dammtorpalais building. The Wagner Hotel handled check-in for the Fresena in the evenings.

A truly charming hotel in a listed building in a beautiful, very convenient, and central location. A cozy and welcoming breakfast room with a small but excellent buffet that offered everything you could need, and items were always replenished. Small requests were accommodated. The staff was very kind, helpful, and friendly. A relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended for a short stay. My room was small but perfectly formed and, most importantly, quiet 😀 Everything was spotless. I would gladly return!

Room 14 has an extremely small bathroom, and a larger screen would have been nice for the size of the room. Very friendly welcome – even with a glass of sparkling wine! Breakfast was excellent value for money! The location was perfect for our needs!
