Laganas Gay Guide: An LGBTQ+-Friendly Party Resort on Zante

Laganas sits at the head of Laganas Bay on the south coast of Zante (Zakynthos), the southernmost of Greece's Ionian Islands, about 6 kilometres south of Zante Town. Over the past two decades it has grown from a fishing village into the island's largest and most developed package-holiday resort, best known for its long sandy beach, its loud summer strip, and the protected loggerhead sea-turtle nesting grounds of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

Is Laganas a gay destination?

In honest terms, no — and it is important to set expectations. Laganas is a mainstream, predominantly British and northern-European party resort, not a gay hub. It has no dedicated gay bars or clubs, no gay sauna, no LGBTQ+ community organisation, and no Pride event. What it does have is a relaxed, tolerant, tourist-oriented atmosphere in which LGBTQ+ visitors are welcome everywhere and safety is not a practical concern. If you are looking for a genuine gay scene in Greece, that is found in Athens (the Gazi district and the country's gay saunas) and on the gay island of Mykonos — both a short flight or ferry away.

The scene, realistically

There is no organised gay scene in Laganas. The town's nightlife is a strip of mainstream bars, dance clubs and karaoke venues that draw a young, mixed, holiday crowd. Some of these venues are gay-friendly and happy to have gay customers, but none identify as gay or run regular LGBTQ+ nights, and the venue line-up changes from season to season as bars open, close and rebrand. Because of that turnover, we do not list phantom "gay bars" here; when a genuinely gay or gay-run venue opens and can be verified, it will appear on the bars page.

Beaches

Laganas Beach itself is a wide, family-oriented resort beach and part of the strictly protected turtle-nesting zone, so it is not a gay or naturist beach and has night-time access restrictions in nesting season. The one gay-coded natural spot on this coast is Vrontonero, a remote naturist beach at the far-eastern end of Laganas Bay near Dafni, whose easternmost stretch is long-established as gay-naturist. It has no facilities, is reached on foot, and — crucially — lies inside the National Marine Park, so access is seasonal and can be closed for wildlife protection. Visit responsibly, respect any signage, and never enter nesting beaches between dusk and dawn from May to August.

Where to stay

Accommodation is the practical strength of Laganas: dozens of hotels, studios and apartments, most family-run and entirely comfortable with LGBTQ+ guests, cluster around the strip and the beach. Staying near the strip puts you in the middle of the nightlife but also the noise; quieter options sit at the edges of town or up towards Kalamaki and Zante Town. Book well ahead for July and August, the busiest months.

Getting around and getting there

International visitors fly into Zakynthos International Airport (about 10 km from Zante Town), with seasonal connections from across Europe. Laganas is a 15-20 minute local bus ride or a short taxi from Zante Town, and the resort core is easily walkable. A rental car is useful only for exploring the wider island — Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, the Blue Caves, the Vasilikos peninsula and the mountain villages.

Legal status and safety

Greece is a safe and legally progressive country for LGBTQ+ travellers. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1951, civil partnerships were introduced in December 2015, and in February 2024 Greece became the first Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage with joint adoption rights. Zante and Laganas report no particular safety issues for gay visitors; ordinary caution around a heavy-drinking party resort is the main practical concern. The island runs on Eastern European Time (EET/EEST, UTC+2).

When to visit

Laganas is a summer resort: most bars and hotels operate roughly May to October, with July and August the busiest and hottest. May, June and September offer warm sea, open venues and thinner crowds. In winter much of the resort closes down.

Laganas is a sun-sea-and-nightlife resort that happens to be very welcoming to LGBTQ+ travellers, rather than a gay destination in its own right. Come for affordable beach holidays and an easygoing atmosphere; head to Athens or Mykonos when you want a real Greek gay scene.
