About this place Gaukurinn

Gaukurinn, in a former music hall on Tryggvagata near the Old Harbour, spent a decade as the cornerstone of Reykjavik's alternative queer nightlife - home stage of the Drag-Sugur drag troupe, host of queer open mics, punk gigs and some of the city's most boundary-pushing performance nights. That chapter ended in 2025. The operating company filed for bankruptcy in January, the venue's queer mural was painted over, and the space reopened that spring under the Fever Nightclub model. Much of the drag and queer programming moved elsewhere, and parts of the community that once called Gaukurinn home no longer consider it their safe space. The bar itself is still open and still books live music, karaoke and the occasional alternative night, and you may still find queer events on its calendar - especially during Pride week and Rainbow Reykjavik, when the whole downtown joins in. But if you are looking for Reykjavik's queer anchor today, that is Kiki Queer Bar on Laugavegur, with 22 Bar downstairs as the low-key warm-up spot. Worth a look if you are into live music and alternative bookings; check the current program before making it your queer night out.
