About This Event

Iceland Pride, or Hinsegin Dagar, takes over Reykjavik every August. It started small in 1999. Now it’s one of the world’s most impactful Pride festivals, especially considering the city’s size.

Iceland has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights, often passing progressive laws early. Reykjavik itself has about 130,000 residents, but the Pride parade regularly draws over 100,000 people. That means a huge chunk of the country comes out. This shows deep national solidarity, creating a genuinely joyful, inclusive atmosphere. The turnout reflects Iceland’s continued role as a leader in LGBTQ+ equality, with a strong sense of community that lasts all week.

If you’re coming for Iceland Pride, August 4th to 10th, 2026, expect a full program. Reykjavik’s unique feel and the Midnight Sun’s long daylight hours make it special. The main parade is the week’s focus. It’s a colorful, energetic walk through the city center, ending in an outdoor festival. This finale usually has a main stage with music, speeches, and local and international performances.

Beyond the parade, the week fills with events. Expect parties, from small bar gatherings to big dance events that stretch into the bright Arctic nights. You’ll also find art exhibitions, film screenings, and theater, often in downtown Reykjavik venues. Educational workshops and panel discussions tackle current LGBTQ+ issues, encouraging dialogue. City squares, community centers, and cultural institutions host many of these. The Midnight Sun in August means outdoor events and late-night parties happen in daylight, which adds a surreal quality, making celebrations longer than elsewhere.

Book your accommodation early. Reykjavik’s hotels get busy. Six to nine months out is a good idea, maybe even earlier, for better selection and prices. The city center, especially around Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur, is the festival’s nerve center. Most venues, shops, and restaurants are nearby. Staying here means you can walk to many events.

Ticket details for specific events will appear closer to the date on hinsegindagar.is. The parade and main outdoor festival are usually free and open to everyone. Some parties or performances might need tickets, which you can often buy online or at the door. Iceland Pride feels profoundly joyful, communal, and warm. The crowd is diverse: locals of all ages, families, and many international visitors, all celebrating LGBTQ+ rights. It’s a friendly event, with a strong sense of belonging and collective pride.

Practical Tips

Stake out Laekjargata early

The Hallgrimskirkja start is postcard-pretty but jammed; drift down to Laekjargata about an hour before kick-off, grab a coffee at one of the cafes, and settle in where the floats really open up.

Stay for the park concert

The parade deposits you in Hljomskalagardur for a free open-air show. Bring a light layer, because even in August the wind off Tjornin will remind you you are in Iceland.
