Samtökin '78

Samtokin '78 is Iceland's national queer organisation, founded in 1978 and still the beating heart of the country's LGBTQ+ community. Its office and queer community centre sit at Sudurgata 3 in central Reykjavik - the same building that houses the Hinsegin dagar (Reykjavik Pride) office, which makes it the closest thing Iceland has to a queer community hub. The organisation runs free counselling for queer people, their families and professionals - personal, social and legal - alongside an education service that trains schools and workplaces across the country. There is a queer library, regular peer-support groups (including several trans and youth groups whose meetings are open to visitors), and a youth programme that reaches down to pre-teens, something few national organisations anywhere can claim. For travellers, Samtokin '78 is a practical first stop if you want to plug into local queer life beyond the bar scene: the community centre hosts events year-round, staff speak fluent English, and the organisation's calendar is the most reliable guide to what the community itself is doing in any given week. During Pride week in early August the building becomes one of the busiest corners of the city. Iceland's trans advocacy group, Trans Island, operates as a section of Samtokin '78, and the organisation was a driving force behind the country's 2019 Gender Autonomy Act and the 2023 conversion-therapy ban - a track record that explains why Iceland sits in Europe's top three on the Rainbow Map.
