While this is a grand, charming hotel with all the amenities you need and a good staff, it cannot overcome the deterioration of the area in which it resides. The hotel sits in very close proximity to old town Genoa, the Port area and the train station which should be perfect, and probably once was. But I would never recommend the area to an American tourist; possibly no international tourist. This whole area is unclean and unsafe, especially near dark and unless you just need to be in this specific section of Genoa then I would say to stay in the new-town area down near the water instead. That section East of the aquarium/port is clean, safe, beautiful and meant for travelers. You can easily walk into old town and the port without being trapped by it. I hate giving poor reviews, especially since it's not the hotel's fault, but in this case I think it's necessary to warn people. Old town Genoa almost ruined the last 3 days of an otherwise amazing Northern Italy trip.

Unfortunately, I have to deduct one star. We spent one night here. The rooms are very luxurious and stylishly furnished. Unfortunately, the hotel's roof, including the whirlpools, was closed due to an event. This is a significant drawback, as we received no compensation. At checkout, we weren't asked if everything was alright. Therefore, I pointed out the problem myself. There was no apology or anything else. Therefore, I have to deduct one star from this otherwise lovely hotel due to the service.

Grand Hotel Savoia is one of those rare hotels where you can still feel its old-world grandeur. The building retains much of its historic character that reflects Genoa’s golden age. The room is a bit dated but comfortable and clean enough. You could smell the old building smell and the facilities could use some update. The staff was exceptional though. Location is prime if you want to be close to the Principe station for high speed train but otherwise I would recommend to stay near the via xx September street more as there are more stuff to do and the area is generally nicer.

Five star hotel, but not 5 star for everyone. We visited for one night on Tuesday, went to Turin for two nights and returned for another night on Friday. On Tuesday we were given a lovely room with a modern walk in shower. The service was friendly and the experience terrific so we were looking forward to returning. On our return, the staff had no idea that we had been before, and checked us in taking copies of our passport again. They then gave us a room without a walk in shower and it was much smaller and noisier than the previous room. We explained that we had booked both nights with the agreement of a shower and quiet room so they changed our room. We had also requested on our previous visit to have a sheet instead of a duvet as the room was too hot and they could not find any note of this It was not the same standard of room as the first one and the sink leaked. When we checked out we were asked to leave a tip which we weren't the first time.
