Gay Alice Springs: The Honest 2026 Guide

The honest summary: Alice Springs (Mparntwe, on Arrernte country) is a desert town of about 25,000 people, roughly 1,500 km from both Darwin and Adelaide, and it has no gay bar, no gay club and no regular queer night. What it does have is surprising for a town this size: fabALICE, a four-day drag and cabaret festival every March that has made the Red Centre a fixture on the Australian queer calendar since 2024. Outside festival week, queer life here is private and word-of-mouth, run through friends, a Facebook group and two health services on Todd Street. Come for the landscape and the festival, not the nightlife.

Legal in one line: the Northern Territory decriminalised sex between men on 1 January 1984, same-sex marriage has been legal nationally since 9 December 2017, the NT Anti-Discrimination Act has covered sexual orientation and gender identity since its 2022 amendments, and there is no ban on conversion practices in the NT.

Where things are
Everything a visitor needs sits in a compact grid west of the Todd River. Todd Mall, the pedestrian strip between Wills Terrace and Gregory Terrace, has the cafés, galleries and Aboriginal art centres, and the two queer-relevant services in town are both on or just off it. The Todd River is a dry sandy bed for most of the year; the casino, the DoubleTree and the golf course are about 2 km south along Barrett Drive, and the airport is about 15 km south of town. There's no gay neighbourhood, and none of the old guides that mention one were right.

Bars and nightlife
We checked Travel Gay, Spartacus, misterb&b, GayCities, Star Observer and QNews, plus Google Maps and local news, and none of them list a current gay or lesbian bar in Alice Springs. Tourism Australia says the same. The pubs and bars around Todd Mall and Gregory Terrace, such as Uncles Tavern, The Rock Bar, Bojangles and the Todd Tavern, are ordinary country-town venues with a mixed and sometimes rowdy crowd. Some older sites describe Uncles or The Rock Bar as gay bars; we found nothing to back that up, so we don't list them as such. Epilogue Lounge on Todd Street, a café and rooftop bar, was showing as temporarily closed on Google in October 2026.

During fabALICE the picture changes: drag shows, a disco and a festival bar take over venues around town for four days, with Crowne Plaza Lasseters as the opening-night hub. Outside that week, the realistic options are a quiet drink anywhere in town, or the apps, which work here as in any Australian regional centre.

Saunas

Saunas and cruising
There's no gay sauna, sex-on-premises venue or adult shop with a cruise lounge in Alice Springs; the nearest are in the southern capitals, a flight away (Darwin has none either). A listing called The Bath House Studios on Stuart Terrace is an art studio, not a bathhouse. We found no cruising area with two independent current sources, so we don't list one. Alice Springs is inland desert, so there are no beaches, and none of the swimming holes in the West MacDonnell Ranges are clothing-optional.

Pride & Events

Pride: fabALICE
fabALICE is the town's queer festival. It was first held on 7 to 10 March 2024, timed for the 30th anniversary of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the 1994 film whose drag trio end their journey at Lasseters casino in Alice Springs and climb Kings Canyon. Star Observer and Qantas Travel Insider describe a family-friendly programme of drag shows, cabaret, a street parade down Todd Mall, a night market, drag bingo and a gala in an open-air quarry. The 2025 festival ran on 27 to 30 March, and the 2026 edition on 26 to 29 March. Dates for 2027 had not been announced at the time of writing; watch fabalice.com and @fabalicefest on Instagram.

The town also had an earlier Pride, the Alice Springs Pride Carnivale, held each October at Snow Kenna Park from 2013 and billed as Australia's most remote Pride. We found no edition after about 2016. Some guides still say Alice Springs Pride is in August or late October; neither is current. In June 2025 the YMCA ran a free, all-ages Pride Party, a one-off rather than an annual event. Darwin's Pride Festival is in June, 1,500 km north.

Community and health
NTAHC, the Northern Territory AIDS and Hepatitis Council, has its Alice Springs office in Reg Harris Lane off Todd Mall (08 8953 3172, weekdays 8:30am to 5pm, closed 12 to 1). It offers HIV and hepatitis support, help getting PrEP and PEP, and a quiet place to ask about local queer networks. Clinic 34, the NT Health sexual health clinic, is on the ground floor of Eurilpa House at 25 Todd Street (08 8951 7549, weekdays 8:30am to 3:30pm), with free STI testing and treatment and no Medicare card needed. Visitors who aren't eligible for Medicare can get help with free PrEP through both.

Media coverage describes Alice Springs as home to a sizeable population of sistergirls and brotherboys, the terms many Aboriginal trans and gender-diverse people use. We couldn't find a current Central Australian sistergirl or brotherboy organisation to list; the well-known Tiwi sistergirls are from the Top End. A Facebook group called Queer Territory Mparntwe exists, but we couldn't confirm how active it is.

Where to Stay

Where to stay
There are no gay hotels or guesthouses. For walking to the mall, the central choices are Greet Hotel (the former Diplomat) on Gregory Terrace, Mantra Alice Springs on Leichhardt Terrace, the Mercure Alice Springs Resort across the river footbridge, and Red Rock Hostel or Alice's Secret Travellers Inn for a budget bed. Crowne Plaza Lasseters, where Priscilla's finale was filmed and where fabALICE opens, and the DoubleTree by Hilton are on Barrett Drive, about 2 km south; Quest and Desert Palms are in between and have kitchens. During fabALICE week in March, book well ahead.

Getting there and around
Alice Springs Airport (ASP) is about 15 km south of town, with direct flights from Adelaide, Darwin, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns on Qantas, Virgin Australia and Airnorth; check which carrier flies your route. The Ghan train stops here between Adelaide and Darwin from March to November, with no service in the summer months. By road, Uluru is about 470 km (five hours) south-west and Kings Canyon about 330 km. In town, taxis are the way to get around after dark, and you'll want a car for the ranges.

Safety

Safety and practical tips
Australia is legally safe for LGBTQ+ travellers, and the NT's anti-discrimination law covers you. That said, the NT government narrowed parts of that law in 2025, weakening hate-speech protections and giving religious schools more room on staff conduct, and Top End Pride and Equality Australia opposed the changes. Day-to-day, the main visitor risks in Alice Springs are property crime and late-night disorder in the town centre; a youth curfew was imposed after brawls in March 2024. Take a taxi at night rather than walking through the CBD or along the riverbed, and don't leave anything in your car.

The best months are May to September: warm days, cold nights, and frost in June and July. From November to February it regularly passes 40°C. fabALICE in late March falls at the end of the hot season, so expect warm days.

A few words
Werte (Arrernte for hello). Mparntwe is the Arrernte name for Alice Springs; you'll see it on signs and in local media. Many Aboriginal-run tours and art centres operate around town, and sacred sites are signposted; ask before photographing people or places.

Closed or changed / Gone but still Googled
Bar Doppio (a lesbian-owned café in the mall), Febe's Bar, the Rainbow Connection gay B&B and the Friday gay drinks at the Alice Springs Resort all appear in Star Observer coverage from around 2008 to 2010, and none has any trace today. The Alice Springs Pride Carnivale has not run since about 2016. Uncles Tavern, The Rock Bar and Bojangles are still open, but as mainstream pubs, not gay bars.

At a glance
Gay bars: none. Gay saunas: none. Cruising areas listed: none. Pride: fabALICE, March (2026: 26 to 29 March; 2027 not announced). Health: Clinic 34 (25 Todd St) and NTAHC (Reg Harris Lane). Airport: ASP, 15 km. Best season: May to September.

Last verified: October 2026.

Questions fréquentes

Non.
