?? Safety Warning ? Jordan (Hostile)

Same-sex acts are not explicitly illegal in Jordan, but public order laws are used and police entrapment via dating apps is documented. No visible LGBTQ+ scene exists. Exercise extreme discretion. International chain hotels only. Read our full Jordan safety guide.

Amman: A Liberal Minority in a Conservative Country

Amman is Jordan's capital and the home of the country's small educated liberal class ? a demographic that is more progressive on social issues than the Jordanian mainstream, more internationally connected, more likely to have studied or lived abroad. The gap between this stratum and the broader Jordanian social conservatism is wide, and it creates the limited social space that LGBTQ+ visitors navigate when in the city.

The LGBTQ+ scene in Amman ? to the extent that term applies ? consists of: private gatherings among friends accessed through personal networks; a handful of bars and cafes in the Jabal Amman / Rainbow Street area that are LGBTQ+-tolerant without identification; and the Grindr-mediated social connections that exist in every city with a smartphone-owning population. There are no gay bars. There is no Pride. There are no visible LGBTQ+ organisations operating publicly (the few that have tried have been shut down or forced underground).

Cantaloupe Gastro Pub on Rainbow Street and Books@Cafe on Omar Bin Al-Khattab Street are among the most established LGBTQ+-tolerant spaces ? not gay venues, but places where the particular crowd and culture create relative comfort. Both require the discretion that the Jordan context demands.

Where to Stay

W Amman in Abdoun is the recommended option. The Grand Hyatt Amman (Zahran Street), the Four Seasons Amman (5th Circle), and the Fairmont Amman are all international chain properties with non-discrimination policies and are recommended alternatives. Do not stay in locally-owned guesthouses.

Petra, Wadi Rum and Beyond

Jordan's most compelling tourist sites ? Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Aqaba ? are genuine world-class destinations. They can be visited by LGBTQ+ travellers exercising the same absolute discretion as in Amman. Tourist sites are more focused on visitor management than on policing personal conduct, and the heavy presence of international tour groups provides some practical cover. Guide the same rules apply: no public affection, no identifying as LGBTQ+ to officials or service providers, no dating app use in unfamiliar situations.
