The honest summary: Arosa has no gay bar, no gay sauna and no gay district. For 51 weeks a year it's a quiet, expensive Swiss ski and hiking village at the end of a railway line. For one week in January it hosts Arosa Gay Ski Week, which has run since 2005 and takes over the Kursaal, several hotels and mountain huts. Come for that week, or come for the mountains and don't expect a scene.

Legal in one line: Same-sex marriage has been legal in Switzerland since 1 July 2022, joint adoption comes with it, and the penal code has covered discrimination based on sexual orientation since 2020.

Where Arosa is, and what it's like

Arosa sits at about 1,775 metres, at the head of the Schanfigg valley in Graubünden, with around 3,100 residents. The village runs along Poststrasse between the Obersee, by the station, and Innerarosa further up. It's compact and most of it is walkable, though it's steep in places. Some promotional copy calls it car-free. It isn't, as a road comes up from Chur, but you don't need a car here.

The local tourism office states plainly that it welcomes everyone regardless of sexual orientation. In practice, the gay presence is seasonal. Outside Gay Ski Week, you'll be a same-sex couple on holiday in a Swiss resort, which is unremarkable but not a scene.

Arosa Gay Ski Week, 16 to 23 January 2027

The festival is run by a registered Swiss non-profit, Verein Arosa Gay Ski Week. The organisers say more than 800 guests come; Switzerland Tourism says over 900. Older press describes the crowd as mostly male but mixed. Packages combine a hotel, event pass and ski pass, and the official site mentions 13 gay-friendly partner hotels. We didn't find package prices published outside the booking system.

The official 2027 programme, which can change, includes:

    • Sat 16 Jan: welcome cocktail at the Kursaal (18:00), Break the Ice party (22:00)
    • Sun 17 Jan: Frohstok Pride Brunch at aifach (09:00), queer après-ski at Güterschuppen (15:30), Disco Avalanche at Wandelbar (22:00)
    • Mon 18 Jan: classical concert in the Dorfkirche (18:30), Granny Bonbon cabaret at Hotel Altein (22:00)
    • Tue 19 Jan: pool party (21:00) and karaoke (22:00) at Hotel Altein
    • Wed 20 Jan: Arosa Drag Race at Carmennahütte (12:00), Schlager Fest at Alpenblick (21:00), Queer Dance Bar at aifach (22:00)
    • Thu 21 Jan: Heidi & Peter party at Wandelbar (22:00)
    • Fri 22 Jan: awards at Güterschuppen (17:00), White SnowBall closing party at Backstage in the Kursaal (22:00)

Non-skiers do come, for the evening programme, winter walks and sledging. For skiers, the Arosa Lenzerheide area has 225 km of pistes, linked by cable car.

    Bars and nightlife

There's no gay bar. The Kursaal at Poststrasse 131 is the village's nightlife building. Its own site lists the Panorama Bar, the Wunderbar, Backstage for live music and Wandelbar, the basement club. Grindr's 2025 guide describes the Panorama Bar as openly queer-friendly, and we list Wandelbar because it hosts the big Ski Week nights. All of them are mainstream the rest of the year.

    Saunas and cruising

We found no gay sauna in Arosa and no documented cruising area, in English or German sources. The saunas here are hotel spas, such as Mario Botta's Bergoase at the Tschuggen Grand. They're ordinary mainstream spas, so treat them that way. Zurich has the nearest full choice of gay saunas and bars.

    Where to stay

Book early for January, as the village fills up. These properties advertise or are named in connection with the week:

Corrections: what older guides get wrong

    • Arosa isn't in the Prättigau valley. It's in the Schanfigg.
    • Lenzerheide isn't a separate bus trip for skiers: the two areas are linked by cable car.
    • The Säntis and the Alpstein aren't local hiking. They're well to the north, in another part of eastern Switzerland.
    • Zurich Pride is in June, not July.
    • No gay bar has closed here recently, because we found no record of a permanent one.

    Pride and other events nearby

Arosa has no Pride of its own. The closest is Khur Pride in Chur, an hour down the line, run by Verein Khur Pride. Its third edition was on 29 August 2026, starting at Alexanderplatz; the first drew about 1,200 people, according to Südostschweiz. The 2027 date was not announced at the time of writing. Zurich Pride is the country's biggest, in June.

    Community and health

Arosa itself has no LGBTQ+ centre. The canton's own directory lists Aidshilfe Graubünden and the sexual-health service Adebar, both in Chur. In an emergency, dial 112, or 144 for an ambulance and 117 for the police.

    Getting there

The Rhaetian Railway runs from Chur to Arosa in about an hour, over 26 km with 19 tunnels and the Langwies viaduct. Chur is on the main line from Zurich. Allow around two and a half hours from Zurich city, and a bit longer from Zurich Airport, the nearest major airport.

A few words in Swiss German

FAQ

Do I need to ski to go to Gay Ski Week? No. The evening programme is a big part of it, and non-skiers come for that and for the winter walks.

Is there anything gay in Arosa outside January? Nothing dedicated. Enjoy the mountains and go to Zurich for a night out.

Is it safe for same-sex couples? Switzerland has strong legal protections and the local tourism office is openly welcoming. We found no specific local concerns.

When should I book? As early as you can for Gay Ski Week, because rooms for the week go first.
