Best Gay-Friendly Hotels in Chiang Mai

Last verified: November 2026. Chiang Mai has exactly one hotel built for gay men. It is Club One Seven, a men-only teak guesthouse with the city's main gay sauna in the back garden, about 2 km south of the bars. The gay guesthouses that used to fill Chang Phueak and Santitham have closed or gone mainstream, and that includes the Lotus Hotel. Almost everyone else stays in ordinary hotels and chooses them by how far they are from Charoen Prathet Soi 6, the short lane behind the Night Bazaar where most of the gay bars are. This guide covers the one gay hotel, the mainstream hotels within walking distance of Soi 6, and the Old City and north-side options. It also covers what Thai hotels ask of overnight visitors, Chiang Mai Pride, and how the city's early closing laws affect getting home late.

Where to sleep, in real minutes

Chiang Mai's gay scene is small and split across three areas. The main one is Charoen Prathet Soi 6, a lane of open-air beer bars. It runs from Charoen Prathet Road (the river road, where Anantara is) to the Kalare Night Bazaar end near Chang Khlan Road, opposite Le Méridien. Ram Bar, Orion Bar and Connections are all here (Connections moved to the Kalare end of the lane in late 2024). The 6ixcret show drag cabaret is upstairs in the Night Bazaar Building, and Chiang Mai 19 Bar is close by. The second area is north of the moat in Chang Phueak and Santitham. Adam's Apple Club and New Circle Club are the two go-go and host bars still open there. The third is Club One Seven, on its own further down Charoen Prathet Road by the river.

That makes the walkable zone a rectangle. Its edges are Tha Phae Road to the north, Sri Donchai Road to the south, Kotchasarn Road (the east moat) to the west and the Ping River to the east. Anywhere inside it is under 15 minutes' walk from Soi 6. Outside it, take a Grab, which is cheap and quick here. Bars stop serving at midnight and drinking is only allowed until about 1 am in licensed venues, so you are unlikely to be walking home at 3 am.

Night Bazaar and Charoen Prathet: closest to the bars

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is on Charoen Prathet Road. Ram Bar is about 130 m away (2–3 minutes on foot) and the rest of Soi 6 is 6–8 minutes away. The hotel has a riverside pool and a spa, and its restaurant is in the old British Consulate building. Choose it if you want comfort and only a few minutes' walk home. Le Méridien, opposite the Kalare end of the lane, is the other big hotel this close. We have not reviewed it.

The Locals Chiang Mai is at 8/1 Loi Kroh Road. It is 9–11 minutes from Soi 6 and 5–7 minutes from Classic House Massage on Tha Phae Soi 4, and it rates 4.6 from about 130 reviews. Loi Kroh is the city's straight beer-bar and go-go strip. It stays busy and well lit until closing, so the walk is never on an empty street, but ask for a room away from the road.

Wat Ket, across the river: quiet, pretty, a bridge away

137 Pillars House is built around a restored 19th-century teak house once used by the Borneo Company, with suites set in a garden and a pool. Sala Lanna is a riverside boutique hotel on Charoenrajd Road. Our listings put them 830 m and 720 m from the nearest gay bar in a straight line. You have to cross the Ping, though, so allow 15–20 minutes on foot. The cafés and riverside restaurants on the Wat Ket side close early, and after 11 pm the lanes are dark and deserted. They are empty rather than dangerous, and the street dogs cause more trouble than people. Take a Grab back if you are tired.

Old City, east half: temples by day, 20 minutes to the bars

Baan Khun Krub on Ratchapakhinai Road is the closest of the hotels inside the moat. It is 20–23 minutes from Soi 6 and 10–12 minutes from Sound Up on Moon Muang Soi 2, a mixed dance club where many of the young local gay crowd end the night. At Chiang Mai Hotel on Ratvithi Road (23–26 minutes) and The Experience Walking Street on Phra Pok Klao Road (25–28 minutes) are a little further. The walk goes out through Tha Phae Gate and along Tha Phae or Loi Kroh Road, which are both lit and busy until closing. The small sois inside the moat go quiet early. On Sundays Ratchadamnoen Road turns into the Walking Street market and the area is packed from late afternoon.

Old City west and Wualai: sleep well, ride out

The Inside House on Samlarn Road (4.8 from nearly 700 reviews) and The Chiang Mai OLD TOWN Hotel on Ratchamanka Road (4.7 from over 400) are the best-reviewed hotels in this guide. They are also the furthest from the bars, 33–42 minutes on foot to Soi 6, so plan on a Grab. Lis Hotel Chiangmai is at 82 Nantaram Road in Hai Ya, just south of the moat. It is close to the Saturday Wualai walking street and 17–20 minutes from Kaikan CNX, the second men's sauna. Some sites list Kaikan as open daily from 1 pm to midnight, but the main local guide no longer lists it as open, so check before you go. From all three hotels, the Night Bazaar is a short Grab ride.

North of the moat and Nimman: the local side

Premier Hostel is on Manee Nopparat Road along the north moat. It is 4–6 minutes from Sapphic Riot, the city's queer and lesbian bar on Singharat Road, and 17–19 minutes from Adam's Apple. B2 Green on Sermsuk Road is 2–4 minutes from the Siam Dragon Show cabaret, 10–12 minutes from BLOW CNX in Nimman and 18–20 minutes from Adam's Apple. Miracle Cabaret on Chang Phueak Road and Common Massage & Spa on Hussadhisawee Road are also in this area. Younger Thai gay men drink up here, mostly in Nimman's mainstream bars rather than in gay venues. The Night Bazaar is at least 35 minutes on foot, so take a ride.

South along the river: Club One Seven and around it

Club One Seven is at 385/2 Charoen Prathet Road, about 1.9 km south of Soi 6 (30–33 minutes on foot). Trekker Camp on Pa Phao Road is the cheap fallback. It is 8–10 minutes from the sauna and 7–9 minutes from AQUA CNX, a men's massage venue in a housing estate off Chang Khlan Road. The river road between here and the Night Bazaar is quiet and badly lit after dark, so take a Grab rather than walk.

Gay-owned, men-only and clothing-optional

Club One Seven is the only men-only hotel in Chiang Mai that is clearly open in 2026. The main booking sites list it as "Club One Seven Gaymen". It has a male dormitory as well as private rooms (about 11, according to long-running listings), and it calls itself a gay sauna and gay men-only hotel. The complex is a Lanna-style teak house on the Ping with a pool, gym, steam room, dry sauna, dark room and cubicles. Hotel guests use the sauna free. Non-guests pay at the door. Recent reviews quote about THB 140–160 (about US$4–5), so confirm the current price. In January 2026 the hours were listed as 4 pm to midnight, a later start than the old noon opening. Gay directories have described it as gay-owned and managed for years. It holds naked nights and themed parties. Reviews have some caveats. The building is ageing, one reviewer said a massage cost several times the street rate, and rooms near the sauna can be noisy until midnight. Stay here for the sauna and the company, not the décor.

Closed or gone mainstream. For years the Lotus Hotel on Wiang Bua Road in Santitham, across the road from Adam's Apple, was the city's gay hotel, with a garden bar. The local guide gay-in-chiangmai says it has been under new management and no longer gay since September 2018. Its 2026 overview says all the old gay hotels and guesthouses in Chang Phueak and Santitham have closed or are under renovation. Some international gay hotel sites still list the Lotus as gay-managed, but that information is out of date. Don't confuse it with the Lotus Pang Suan Kaew, a large mainstream hotel that closed in January 2025.

Possibly still around, unverified. Older gay listings name a few small gay-owned or gay-managed guesthouses. Come-On Place is on Bumrungburi Road by Suan Buak Haad park (a gay directory last checked it in 2020). Cool Guest House is near Chang Phueak Gate. Liam's Suan Dok Mai guesthouse is a 9-room gay-owned place in Faham across the river (last checked in January 2024). I could not confirm that any of them is still open or still gay-run in 2026, so message them before booking. Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort, on the river, has Booking.com's Travel Proud badge and is popular for gay weddings, but it is a mainstream resort.

Clothing-optional: nothing in town beyond the sauna and Club One Seven's pool area. There is no gay beach, as Chiang Mai is hundreds of kilometres from the sea.

Booking rules that bite

• Taxes. Chiang Mai has no city tourist tax. Thai hotel prices are often quoted "++", which means a 10% service charge and 7% VAT are added on top. Booking sites usually show the full total at checkout, but small guesthouses sometimes quote net prices. Check which you are looking at before comparing.
• The 300-baht entry fee. Thailand's proposed tourist entry fee (THB 300 by air, THB 150 by land or sea) was still not being collected as of June 2026. If it starts, you will pay it on arrival in the country, not at your hotel.
• Visitors and ID. Thai hotels have to register foreign guests' passports with immigration. Many also ask overnight visitors to leave a Thai ID card or passport at reception, whoever they are. Formal "joiner fees" are a Pattaya and Bangkok habit. I found no sign of them at the hotels in this guide, but policies change, so ask by message.
• The golden tip. If you are travelling as a couple or expect company, book the room for 2 guests. It usually costs little or nothing extra, and nobody will ask about visitors.
• Same-sex couples. Same-sex marriage has been legal since January 2025. Asking for a double bed is no issue at any hotel in this guide.
• Deposits and minimum stays. Mid-range and luxury hotels put a hold on your card at check-in, and small guesthouses may want cash. Expect minimum stays and non-refundable rates around Yi Peng in November, Christmas to New Year and Songkran (13–15 April). Terms vary by hotel, so confirm before booking.
• Smoking. All hotels in this guide are non-smoking indoors, and most list a cleaning fine in their house rules. Amounts vary, so check at check-in.



The gay calendar and where to book for it

Chiang Mai Pride

The 2026 edition was on Sunday 24 May 2026 under the theme "Inclusive City Chiang Mai". The parade left in the early evening from the Chiang Mai Buddhist Centre (Phutthasathan) on Tha Phae Road. It went along Night Bazaar Road and Loi Kroh Road to the main stage at Tha Phae Gate. Pride now has the provincial governor's backing. In 2009 the first march was blocked and never left its starting point. Older guides say Pride is in February, but it has moved to May. The 2027 dates had not been announced as of November 2026, so watch the organisers' channels from early in the year.

Where to book: the whole route runs through the walkable zone, so The Locals on Loi Kroh Road and the Old City east hotels put you on or near it. In 2026 the Furama Chiang Mai and Dusit Princess Chiang Mai marched as hotel partners. InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping held Pride Month events, including a rooftop party. None of them is an official host hotel. Late May is low season and hot, so rooms are easy to find. Booking 4–6 weeks ahead is enough unless you want a particular boutique hotel.



The other dates that change prices

Yi Peng and Loy Krathong fall at the November full moon. That is the hardest week of the year to find a room, and rates along the river are well above normal. I could not confirm the official 2026 programme dates, so check with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and book months ahead if you are coming then. Songkran (13–15 April) means three days of water fights, and everything near Tha Phae Gate and the moat gets soaked. February to April is smoke season. On 2 April 2026 Chiang Mai ranked as the world's second most polluted city. Club One Seven holds parties through the year but announces them at short notice on its own channels.

Getting back at 3 am

From the airport. Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is only 3–4 km from the centre. The official taxi counter charges a flat THB 150 (about US$4.50) for a sedan into town. Grab costs about THB 80–200 depending on demand. Either takes 10–20 minutes to the Night Bazaar or the Old City. There is a city bus, but I could not confirm a current timetable, and the taxi fare is low enough that you won't need it.

From the bars. Grab is the app to use, for both cars and motorbike taxis. It is cheap within the centre: Old City to the Night Bazaar usually costs about THB 50–80. Red songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) charge a flat fare of about THB 30 within the city by day, but there are fewer at night. Tuk-tuks wait near Tha Phae Gate and the Night Bazaar, and you need to agree a price before you get in. Bars close between midnight and 1 am, so by 3 am the city is shut and Grab is your only option.

Walking. Chiang Mai is safe to walk at night by regional standards. Tha Phae Road, Loi Kroh Road, Chang Khlan Road and the Night Bazaar block stay lit and busy until closing. The real hazards are broken pavements, motorbikes on the pavement and packs of street dogs in the quiet sois. That applies most across the river in Wat Ket and on Charoen Prathet Road towards Club One Seven. Take a ride for those stretches.



Health, safety and the law

PrEP, PEP and testing. PrEP is easy to get here, and there are three clinics to try:

• Hugsa Clinic, 77/7 Kotchasarn (Khotchasan) Road, on the east moat a short walk from Tha Phae Gate. HIV and STI testing, and PrEP.
• MPlus Chiang Mai, 142 Moo 1, Soi Chom Chan, Pa Daet (tel. 053-283108). PrEP and PEP, run with Nakornping Hospital.
• CAREMAT, 257/102-103 Mu Ban Dao Dueng Soi 2, Su Thep. It focuses on men who have sex with men.

For PEP outside clinic hours, go to a hospital emergency department. PEP has to start within 72 hours.

Dating apps. In March 2025 Chiang Mai police arrested a 31-year-old man at the airport. He allegedly used a dating app to lure victims to hotels and rob them, and he was part of a pattern seen across Asia. Meet in a bar first, keep your passport, cash and spare cards in the room safe, never accept an open drink, and tell someone where you are. There have been earlier reports here of foreign gay men being drugged with GHB and robbed. If you bring someone back, follow the hotel's ID rule, because it protects you as well.

Alcohol. Since 8 November 2025, the drinker can be fined as well as the bar for drinking outside legal hours. The fine is reported as up to THB 10,000 (about US$300). The old ban on sales between 2 pm and 5 pm was lifted in December 2025. Bars stop serving at midnight, and you can keep drinking until about 1 am in licensed venues. Local guides say stricter enforcement of closing times is the reason the late-night Thai gay scene has shrunk.

Drugs. Thai drug law is severe, and chemsex drugs (methamphetamine, GHB, ecstasy) carry prison sentences. Foreigners get no leniency. Cannabis flower was put back under control on 26 June 2025. Recreational use is banned, and buying it needs a Thai medical prescription. The dispensaries you still see do not make it legal to smoke in your hotel.

Smoking and vaping. Smoking is banned inside bars, restaurants and hotel rooms. E-cigarettes are illegal to import or sell in Thailand, and you can be penalised for having one, so leave the vape at home.

The law on you. Same-sex relationships are legal, and same-sex marriage has been legal since January 2025. Holding hands in the tourist centre draws no attention, but Thais of any orientation are reserved about more than that in public. Temple dress codes apply to everyone: cover your shoulders and knees.

Three picks

Budget: Club One Seven. A bed in the men's dorm or a basic private room gets you free use of the city's main gay sauna, pool and gym, which you would otherwise pay for each evening. It is the only place in Chiang Mai where the hotel is itself part of the gay scene. Budget for Grab rides to Soi 6.

Mid-range: The Locals Chiang Mai. It is 9–11 minutes from Soi 6 and 5–7 from Classic House Massage, it is on the Pride parade route, and it rates 4.6. Ask for a room at the back.

Splurge: Anantara Chiang Mai Resort. Ram Bar is 2–3 minutes from the gate, the river pool is quiet by day, and you can be in bed 5 minutes after last orders. If you would rather have a historic building and a slightly longer walk, 137 Pillars House is 15–20 minutes away across the river.
