You come in from the station over the Puppenbrücke, and there it is: the Holstentor, two fat brick towers with pointed caps, leaning slightly, as if the medieval gate has had one glass too many. Behind it the Old Town sits on its island in the Trave, a UNESCO-listed tangle of brick Gothic gables, church spires and narrow passageways, with gulls overhead and the smell of roasted almonds drifting out of the marzipan shops on Breite Straße. It's a beautiful city for a weekend. It is not a nightlife city. Lübeck has no dedicated gay bar or club in 2026: queer life here is a monthly meet-up, a film night, a café table and one big August Pride, with Hamburg's bars 45–50 minutes away by train.
Set expectations: this page exists because people search for gay bars in Lübeck, and the honest answer is that there aren't any right now. What the city does have is a small, friendly, community-run scene centred on the Lübecker CSD e.V. and its space on Hartengrube, a queer youth project, and a few cafés that host queer groups. If you want to dance, plan an evening in Hamburg.
Legal in one line: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017 and strong anti-discrimination law, and since November 2024 the Self-Determination Act (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) lets adults change their legal gender by declaration. Sex in public is a different matter: under §183a StGB (Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses, "causing a public nuisance") sexual acts in public that deliberately or knowingly cause offence can bring a fine or up to a year in prison. Beer and wine can be bought from 16, spirits from 18.
Where queer Lübeck actually meets
Location 25 and the Lübecker CSD e.V. · Hartengrube 25–27
The nearest thing Lübeck has to a queer living room. Hartengrube is one of the steep lanes that run down from the Old Town's spine to the Trave, and at numbers 25–27 is the office of the Lübecker CSD e.V., the association behind Lübeck Pride, and the event space it calls Location 25. Two regular dates are worth planning around:
- Queertreff Lübeck: a relaxed meet-up for "LGBTQ + Ally", described by its organisers as new, on the second Monday of the month from 18:00. Listed dates for autumn 2026 were 12 October and 9 November. The organisers ask you to register in advance by WhatsApp or phone (015750123071).
- Queer Cinema: a monthly film night at 20:00, mostly on Fridays. The 2026–27 programme leans into queer film history: Mädchen in Uniform on 30 October 2026, Der Kreis on 27 November, a short-film night on 18 December, then Bent, Sauna, Privileg and 15 Liebesbeweise into April 2027.
- Getting around: the Old Town island is small and walkable; Lübeck Hauptbahnhof is just west of the Holstentor. City buses cover the rest, and trains run to Travemünde and Hamburg.
- Getting there: Hamburg Airport is the nearest big airport; Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is the usual rail connection for long-distance trains.
- Staying: for options from the Klassik Altstadt Hotel in the Old Town to the schickSAAL kollektiv hostel for a budget stay, see our Lübeck hotels page.
- Money: cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for smaller cafés and adult venues.
- Apps: Grindr and Romeo are the main apps in northern Germany. In a small city, profiles can be discreet; respect that.
- When to go: mid-August, for CSD weekend, is the liveliest time for queer Lübeck; December brings the city's Christmas markets.
- Moin! – hello, at any time of day, all over northern Germany.
- Prost! – cheers! Ein Bier, bitte – a beer, please.
- Kneipe – pub, bar. schwul – gay (men). lesbisch – lesbian. queer – used as in English.
- CSD (Christopher Street Day) – Pride.
- Klönschnack – a chat, a natter (northern German).
- Kaffee und Kuchen – the afternoon coffee-and-cake ritual. Nusstorte – nut cake.
- Hauptbahnhof (Hbf) – main station. Altstadtinsel – the Old Town island.
Dates change; check the calendar on luebeck-pride.de before you go. Other autumn dates on the same calendar include a reading, Come out!, at the Willy-Brandt-Haus (Königstraße 21) on Thursday 29 October 2026 at 19:00. The association is also building a "CityGuide+" of queer and queer-friendly places on its website, still in progress at the time of writing.
Tonfink Kulturcafé & Bar · Große Burgstraße 46
A cosy café-bar at the northern end of the Old Town, towards the Burgtor, that Lübeck's tourist board describes as "a cozy café with homemade cakes and a trendy bar with live music". Expect fair-trade coffee, organic wine, regional beers, vegetarian and vegan food, a book-swap shelf, board games and concerts, comedy or cabaret most weeks, usually from 20:00, with a hat passed round for the performers. It isn't a gay bar, but it's where the Bi- und pansexueller Klönschnack (a chat group for bi and pan people; Klönschnack is northern German for a natter) meets; the next listed date was 3 November 2026 at 19:00. Listed hours are Monday–Thursday 17:30–00:00 and Friday–Saturday 17:30–02:00, closed Sundays; table reservations on 0451 54690036.
Aidshilfe Lübeck and the youth groups
The Aidshilfe Lübeck für sexuelle Gesundheit e.V. hosts a Polystammtisch, a meet-up for polyamorous people (next listed for 22 October 2026 at 19:00), and is the place to ask about sexual-health testing. For young people, QwertZ – Queer & Zentral is the city's queer youth project and posts meeting times on Instagram, and SCHLAU Lübeck / NaSowas runs education and counselling.
Men-only and adult venues
Dolly Best on Lederstraße in the Old Town (one directory gives the name as Dolly Buster, at Lederstraße 2–4) is an adult shop reported to have a porn cinema, cabins and a cruising area, open in the daytime. It's a mixed adult shop, not a bar, Google reviews are split (3.4 from eight reviews), and one 2024 reviewer reports a cash entry fee. Hours are unconfirmed; check before you go. It's covered in our Lübeck cruising guide.
About the Wallanlagen: older websites point to the green ramparts around the Old Town as an outdoor cruising area. We don't give directions. They are public parks used by walkers, families and cyclists; sex there can fall under §183a StGB, and after dark you are an easy target. Use the apps (Grindr and Romeo are both widely used in Germany), meet somewhere public first, or head to Hamburg's bars and saunas.
Unconfirmed: a V.I.P. Club on Marlesgrube still appears in an older gay directory, but we found no sign that it is active.
Going out in Hamburg instead
For a real night out, do what Lübeck's queer community does and take the train. Regional RE 8 and RE 80 trains run from Lübeck Hauptbahnhof to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof about every 30 minutes in the daytime: the RE 8 takes about 45 minutes, the RE 80, which also stops in Ahrensburg, about 50 minutes. Hamburg has gay bars, clubs, saunas and a big CSD of its own; see our Hamburg bars guide. Plan the trip home before the second drink: Deutsche Bahn's route page lists the last direct departures from Hamburg Hbf to Lübeck at 23:34 and 00:06 (the latter arriving at about 00:52), and warns that weekend and holiday timetables can differ. Late trains also change with engineering works, so check the exact time in the DB Navigator app on the day, or book a bed in Hamburg and come back in the morning.
A day out, the Lübeck way
Start at the Holstentor and walk up into the Old Town for coffee and cake at Niederegger on Breite Straße. The marzipan maker's historic main house has a shop on the ground floor stacked with marzipan in every shape and colour, and a café upstairs in plush red rooms with gold trim, where the thing to order is the Lübecker Nusstorte, cream, walnut and marzipan. Niederegger's Arkaden-Café, directly opposite, has a terrace looking at St Mary's Church and serves a marzipan cappuccino. Then duck into the Gänge und Höfe: narrow, tunnel-like passages cut through the street-front houses into hidden courtyards of tiny cottages, built when craftsmen and workers had to live inside the crowded city walls. A 17th-century count found around 180 of them. People live there, so keep your voice down. In the afternoon, take the train to Travemünde (about 23 minutes to Travemünde Strand on the RE 8 or RB 86) for a walk along the Baltic beach and the harbour mouth, where the ferries head out to Scandinavia. Back in town, end with a drink and a concert at Tonfink, or, on the right Monday or Friday, at Location 25.
Practical tips
Pride: CSD Lübeck
Lübeck's Christopher Street Day, branded Lübeck Pride, is the one weekend when the Old Town turns rainbow. In 2026 a Pride week began on 10 August, a warm-up disco on the Markt opened the main weekend on Friday 14 August from 15:00, and on Saturday 15 August a street festival filled the Markt from 11:00 while the demonstration set off from the Markt at 12:00, under the motto #unverhandelbar ("non-negotiable"): queer rights are not a bargaining chip. The route traditionally runs from the Markt along Breite Straße to the Holstentor and back. Several thousand people marched in 2025, and entry to the street festival is free. The organisers have announced 20 and 21 August 2027 for the next CSD; details appear on luebeck-pride.de and on our CSD Lübeck page.

Frequently asked questions
Are there gay bars in Lübeck?
No. We found no dedicated gay bar or club open in Lübeck in 2026; queer social life runs through community events such as the Queertreff and Queer Cinema at Location 25 on Hartengrube. For bars and clubs, most people take the train to Hamburg.
Where do queer people meet in Lübeck?
Mostly at Location 25 on Hartengrube, home of the Lübecker CSD e.V., which hosts a monthly Queertreff and a Queer Cinema night. The café-bar Tonfink on Große Burgstraße hosts a bi and pan meet-up; check luebeck-pride.de for current dates.
How far is Hamburg's gay scene from Lübeck?
About 45 to 50 minutes by regional train, with RE 8 and RE 80 services roughly every 30 minutes in the daytime. The last direct trains back from Hamburg Hbf leave around midnight, so check DB Navigator before you go out.
When is CSD Lübeck?
In mid-August. The 2026 main weekend was 14 and 15 August, and the organisers have announced 20 and 21 August 2027 for the next CSD.
Is Lübeck gay-friendly?
Yes, in a relaxed northern German way: Germany has had same-sex marriage since 2017, and several thousand people join the CSD march each summer. The scene is small and community-run, so come for the Old Town and the Baltic coast rather than the nightlife.
