South Beach's gay bars cluster around 8th Street and the blocks north of there. It's not America's biggest gay scene, but it's active and well-established. The vibe shifts through the day: pool-bar culture in the afternoon, then late-night clubs for the crowd that shows up after midnight.
The 8th Street area
Most gay bars in South Beach are on Eighth Street and the blocks immediately north and south. You can walk between several places in minutes, so bar-hopping is easy. The area's compact and well-lit. No need for a car to get between the main spots.
These bars aren't all alike. Some are relaxed neighborhood places with a pool table and cheap drinks. Others are full-on nightclubs with serious sound systems and international DJs during circuit weekends. The same place can feel totally different on a Tuesday afternoon versus a Saturday night during Winter Party.
Pool bar and daytime culture
Miami has a genuine pool-bar culture, something most cities lack. Several hotels popular with gay travelers have pool areas that become social hubs during the day, especially on weekends. The crowd that wouldn't hit a nightclub until 1 AM is often out and socializing at a pool party by noon. This is a real part of the Miami gay experience, not just a hotel extra. Expect shorts and sunscreen.
Some pool parties are open events; anyone can buy a day pass. Others are tied to specific hotels and need a room booking or a ticket for a particular event. During circuit weekends, the pool parties are as central as the club nights.
Nightclub timing
Miami nightclubs run late, even by global standards. Showing up before midnight is early. The main crowds arrive between midnight and 2 AM, and clubs can stay open until 5 AM or later on weekend nights. During Winter Party and White Party, outdoor events and after-parties can go until morning. If you're clubbing, pace yourself and plan your sleep.
The bars
- — Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. An arts complex that hosts the Florida Grand Opera and Miami City Ballet, plus many other special events.
- Azucar — Azucar night club. They aim to make people feel good with good drinks, music, energy, and shows. Open Thursday through Sunday. Thursday nights feature the Drag Wars show with TP Lords and DJ Sushi Man, plus dancers and drink specials. Friday night is ladies' night with Pandoras.
- — Bailo has dancers, good drink specials, drag performances, themed evenings, and special guests.
- — Voted "#1 Late Night Club in Miami." This is for serious clubbers. It’s huge, glamorous, and decadent—a classic mega-club with an anything-goes vibe and a great sound system. Not exclusively gay, but Space hosts occasional gay events, including White Party Weekend parties. (Parking is complicated, so take a cab.)
- — A fun night with a hot crowd. Downtown Miami needed a new Thursday night spot. Good venue.
- — Evo Miami hosts a once-a-month party for "like-minded individuals." Their website is www.evomiami.com. Evo Miami was created for the "Evolution" of "low key brothers living unnoticed in Miami." They provide a monthly event for "masculine men of color" to network, socialize, and communicate.
- — This club caters to gay men, but women are welcome if escorted by a male. This policy helps maintain a safe and comfortable gay environment. They enforce club rules strictly; anyone disrespecting entertainers or patrons will be escorted out.
- — ACTION! White Horizons is the morning party to end White Party Week. Dance until noon with DJ Tom Stephan and an opening set by Power Infiniti.
- — Heart is a Miami nightclub. It’s a dance club that hosts many events, known for good parties and DJs. Some LGBT events are held here.
- — Jamboree Lounge is a gay venue in Miami, Florida. The lounge is available for private parties and events.
- — This upscale hotel on downtown US-1 is 5.4 miles from Ocean Drive and the Art Deco District, and 3.1 miles from Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Rooms have contemporary decor, free WiFi, computers, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms include mirror TVs. All rooms come with minibars, wet bars, and coffeemakers. Upgraded rooms access a club lounge with complimentary breakfast and snacks. Amenities include an acclaimed restaurant, a bar, and a cafe.
- — Miami’s first casino with Las Vegas-style slot machines, including the only Roulette wheels and Craps tables in Miami. It has 800 slot machines. The casino also has a concert space. Other amenities include the Big Mouth Cafe, Sky 7-37, a Poker Room.
- — Palace is known for its weekend drag shows, Sunday “Brunchic,” drinks, and burgers. It welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and straight guests. Open Monday–Sunday, 11 AM–1 AM (or later).
- — New Year's Eve Celebration in #Miami: "Private Key Secrets" – Members Only.
- — DJs spin current dancehall and classic reggae in separate rooms. Bottle service available.
- She Life — SheLife created a Miami Lesbian Nightlife to bring the LGBTQA+ community together.
- The Dugout — A neighborhood gay sports bar for men who like to watch. Fun, no attitude.
- — Friendly staff. You can walk in and out at all times. The inside is dark and welcoming, small but with plenty of space, like a living room. The first floor has a bar inside and an outside patio. An ATM is inside. The second floor has another bar. Bathrooms are clean and easy to access. You can smoke upstairs.
- — The Hangar aims to bring back "Great music, Funky fashion, and Gender bending local celebrities." On October 1st, they will transform into a night of "outlandish jaw dropping queer art and a dance floor only a God could wish for."
- TRADE — TRADE is a 7,500 square foot venue built around music. It has a lighting system, a sound system, and contemporary bars and decor. TRADE is a customizable space for photographers, event planners, and film crews.
Practical notes
Drinks are pricey by US standards. Budget $15-20 for a cocktail at the main places. Some bars have happy hours in the early evening. Clubs charge cover on weekends, especially during events. The main streets in the gay area are safe at night. Use common sense, as you would in any city.
