The honest summary: Napier has no gay bar, no gay sauna and no gay district, and we couldn't find a current Napier Pride festival. It's a seaside Art Deco city of wine, architecture and quiet evenings, where queer life runs through community groups and the occasional drag night. Come for the buildings and the Hawke's Bay wineries. If you want a scene, plan a night in Wellington or Auckland as well.

Legal in one line: Sex between men has been legal in New Zealand since 1986, the Human Rights Act has covered sexual orientation since 1993, same-sex marriage has been legal since 2013, and conversion practices were banned in 2022.

What Napier is like

Napier was rebuilt in the Art Deco style after the earthquake of 3 February 1931, and that is why people come. The centre is small and flat. Tennyson Street, Emerson Street and Marine Parade cover most of it on foot. Ahuriri, the old port, is a few minutes' drive north and has the waterfront restaurants. Hastings, the twin city, is about 20 km south, and it is where most of the region's rainbow organising happens.

Older versions of this page, and sites copying them, described "a vibrant gay scene" and "local businesses displaying rainbow flags". We found no evidence for either. A same-sex couple on holiday here will mostly be treated as a couple on holiday, but this is a provincial city, not a queer hub. In 2020 a Napier bar had to apologise after a staff member's rude reply to two drag performers, and a local artist told Hawke's Bay Today in 2025 that "Hawke's Bay can be tough". Don't read either as a warning. They're just the reason we don't describe it as a place where everyone is out.

Bars and nights out

There is no dedicated gay bar. The last organised gay night we could find on record was Assembly Point, upstairs at Latinos on Herschell Street in 2007, and it's long gone. What Napier has now is touring drag at mainstream venues:

    • The Cabana, 11 Shakespeare Road. This is the regular stop for drag bingo tours. Anita Wigl'it and Rita Menu have both played it. Next up: Drag Queen Bingo with Trinity Ice, Thursday 19 November 2026, doors 7pm, NZ$30, R18, per Napier's isite listing.
    • Paisley Stage, 126 Hastings Street. A live music venue that has staged Drag on Paisley, listed regionally as a queer night. We couldn't find a next date.

Both are mainstream on every other night. The Napier isite what's-on page is the most reliable place to find the next drag date.

    Saunas and cruising

There is no gay sauna in Napier. The saunas that show up in a search here are The Sauna Project and The Sauna on Nelson Quay, which are ordinary wellness saunas, and Ocean Spa, a public pool complex on Marine Parade. We also found no credible, current source for a cruising area, so we don't list one. Ocean Beach, south of Hastings, is known to naturists but isn't a gay beach, and Hawke's Bay Today has reported police patrols there after an indecent exposure complaint. Public sex can bring a charge anywhere in New Zealand.

For a gay sauna, the nearest options are in Wellington and Auckland. Most people meeting locally use the apps.

    Where to stay

No gay-run accommodation exists in Napier that we could confirm. All of the hotels below are mainstream, and we list them for location and reviews, not because of a gay-specific offer.

Book early for February. The Art Deco Festival fills the city.

    Closed or changed

    • The County Hotel, 12 Browning Street, has closed. OneRoof reported in October 2026 that it was being sold by receivers, with tenders closing on 12 November. Older guides still recommend it.
    • Guysers Gaystay, a gay-owned men-only B&B, was listed under Napier by mistake for years. It's in Rotorua, about three hours away.
    • "Napier Pride", said to run every November or December with a parade: we found no organiser, date or press report for it. It seems to be an invented claim that spread online, including from an earlier version of this page.
    • Club Rendezvous shows up on Google for "gay bar Napier". Its own listing describes a licensed massage parlour aimed at men looking for women. It isn't a gay venue.

    Pride and community events

    • Manioro Festival, Hastings: the region's main rainbow event, run by Nevertheless with a Māori, Pasifika and takatāpui focus. The first edition in 2023 drew over 1,000 people. The 2026 edition was on 14 and 15 May at Toitoi. The next one had not been announced at the time of writing.
    • Twin City Pride Hīkoi: a 24 km walk from the Napier Sound Shell to the Hastings clock tower, run by Tautoko Takatā Trust. Hawke's Bay Today reported 60 walkers in 2023, down from more than 200 the year before. We couldn't confirm a 2025 or 2026 walk.
    • Art Deco Festival, 18 to 21 February 2027: not a queer event, but it's the city's biggest weekend, and the costumes are worth the trip.

    Health and support

The free public sexual health clinic is at 76 Wellesley Road; phone first. For rainbow-specific support, OUTLine is on 0800 688 5463, and Burnett Foundation Aotearoa covers HIV and PrEP nationally. In Hawke's Bay, the rainbow hub set up by Nevertheless started in 2023 in Hastings. We couldn't confirm its current hours, so check @hbrainbowhub on Instagram.

    Getting here and day trips

Hawke's Bay Airport (NPE) is just north of the city, with Air New Zealand flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. By road, Wellington is about 320 km and around four hours, not the 2.5 hours you'll see quoted. Auckland is around five and a half hours and Taupō about two. Wineries around Hastings and Havelock North are the obvious day out, and the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers is a seasonal tour. Check dates before you plan on it.

    A few words

    • Takatāpui: a Māori term for queer and gender-diverse people, and the one you'll see in local event names.
    • Te Matau-a-Māui: Hawke's Bay. Ahuriri: Napier. Heretaunga: Hastings.
    • Whānau: family, often in the wider sense. Kia ora: hello.

FAQ

Is there a gay bar in Napier?

No. The Cabana and Paisley Stage host drag nights, but both are mainstream venues. Wellington and Auckland have the nearest gay bars.

Does Napier have a Pride?

We couldn't find one. The regional rainbow festival is Manioro in Hastings, and a Pride hīkoi from Napier to Hastings ran in at least 2022 and 2023.

Is Napier safe for gay travellers?

New Zealand's legal protections are strong, and a couple on holiday here is unlikely to attract attention. It's a provincial city, though, so don't expect the openness of central Wellington.

Is there a gay hotel?

Not in Napier. The nearest gay-run stay we know of is Guysers in Rotorua, for men only.

Last verified: November 2026.
