Porto Alegre keeps a compact but steady sauna scene - for many gaucho men the saunas, not the bars, are the backbone of the local map. Expect the classic Brazilian format: dry and steam saunas, private cabins, a video room, lockers and a bar, with towels and sandals handed over at the door.

Rhythm matters more than location here. Weekday afternoons are quiet and mostly regulars; the houses fill from Friday evening, and Sunday afternoon is traditionally the busiest slot of the week. Entry usually covers the towel and locker, with drinks and cabins charged separately - carry cash, as not every house takes cards at the bar.

Etiquette is standard: a shower first, a towel around the waist in common areas, and a clear no means no. Portuguese helps but is not required - the language of the steam room is universal.
