The honest summary: Tulum is a beach and jungle town of about 33,000 people (46,700 in the municipality, INEGI 2020) on Mexico's Caribbean coast. It is relaxed about gay visitors and full of gay couples in high season, but its scene is small. It has one dedicated gay bar (Red Room), which closes for the low season, one men-only gay hotel (Loba Tulum), a roaming queer party, and a long list of mixed bars and beach hotels. There is no gay sauna, no gay beach and no gay street.

What the scene actually looks like

We checked Travel Gay, misterb&b, The Gay Passport (updated 2026), GayTravel4u, Queer in the World and Spanish-language listings for "bar gay", "antro gay" and "vapor" in Tulum. They agree on the shape of it. Tulum is a town where gay travellers mix into the same restaurants, mezcal bars and beach clubs as everyone else, with one gay bar in town and one gay hotel near it.

The town (Tulum Centro, around Avenida Tulum) is where you go out at night. The beach road (the Zona Hotelera, Carretera Tulum–Boca Paila) is where the beach hotels, beach clubs and jungle restaurants are. They are 3–4 km apart, and nobody walks between them after dark.

Bars and nights out

    • Red Room is the only full-time gay bar: a small, red-lit club that guides place on Calle Sol Poniente at Calle Júpiter Sur, near where Avenida Tulum meets Avenida Cobá. Guides list drag on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and strippers on Saturday, Wednesday to Sunday from about 8pm. It closes for the low season (misterb&b says July to November), and Google showed it as temporarily closed in early November 2026. Check @redroomtulum on Instagram before you go.
    • Fruity Tulum is a queer pop-up party that moves between venues in town every few weeks, often on a Friday. There is no fixed calendar, so follow @fruitytulum. The old Fruity cocktail bar is closed.
    • Batey on Calle Centauro Sur, a mojito bar with live Cuban music, is listed as LGBTQ-friendly by Travel Gay and is a common first drink in town.
    • La Guarida, a garden café-bar and cultural space on Calle Orión Sur, is described by misterb&b as well loved by the LGBTQ+ community.
    • Gitano Jungle at Km 7 of the beach road is a mainstream mezcal bar and restaurant with a DJ. GayCities says it comes as close to a queer club as Tulum gets, and Gitano ran a Pride Weekend with a drag party in June 2025.

Casa Jaguar (Km 7.5) and Papaya Playa Project appear on gay travellers' lists as mixed party venues, but neither is a gay venue, so we don't list them.

    Where to stay

Loba Tulum in Aldea Zamá is the only men-only gay hotel: about eight rooms, a clothing-optional rooftop with plunge pools, a bar and day passes, per The Gay Passport, misterb&b and Two Bad Tourists. Intima Resort in La Veleta is adults-only and clothing-optional, but its crowd is mostly straight naturist couples.

Everything else is mixed. In town, Layla (adults-only, Travel Proud) and Hotel Bardo (adults-only villas) are the ones gay guides name. On the beach road, La Valise, La Zebra, Be Tulum and Olas come up most. Our Tulum gay hotels guide covers walking times, taxes and the Visitax.

    Saunas, cruising and beaches

Tulum has no gay sauna. A listing called "Tulum Pride Sauna" circulates online, but no gay guide lists it and Google marks it permanently closed. The spas and temazcal sweat lodges in La Veleta and on the beach road are mixed wellness places. The nearest gay saunas are in Playa del Carmen and Cancún.

There is no gay beach or gay section. Some travellers say gay visitors tend to drift to Playa Santa Fe and the middle stretch of the beach road, but that's a habit, not a gay area. Nudity isn't allowed on Tulum's public beaches. We found no documented cruising area and don't list one.

    Pride and events

Tulum Pride is a small, town-hall-backed Pride month in June. In 2026 the Pride March walked from CROC park to the municipal plaza on Saturday 20 June, after a lighting ceremony on 1 June and a wig race and sports day on 18–19 June (Riviera Maya News). The 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing.

The coast's big gay week is the Arena Festival circuit party, usually based in Playa del Carmen around late January and early February; dates for 2027 were not announced at the time of writing. Cancún holds its own, larger Pride in late spring or June.

    Gone but still Googled

    • Adonis Tulum, once marketed as a gay resort, has been renamed Kore Tulum and sells itself to a general audience.
    • Fruity cocktail bar: closed "until further notice"; the party brand carries on as pop-ups.
    • Tulum Pride Sauna: no evidence it ever operated as a gay sauna; Google lists it as permanently closed.
    • Aloft Tulum, which older gay guides recommend as the chain option, closed at the end of January 2026.
    • "Posada Margherita" and a clothing-optional all-inclusive called "The Palms Tulum" appeared in an older version of this guide. We couldn't confirm either as gay-oriented, so we don't recommend them.

    Practical tips

    • Getting there: Tulum International Airport (TQO) opened in December 2023 about 20 km southwest of town. Cancún airport is about two hours by ADO bus. The Maya Train stops at Tulum and Tulum Airport, but not late at night.
    • Taxis: no meters and no Uber. Agree the fare in pesos before getting in, and take a taxi on the beach road after dark, which has no pavement.
    • Safety: Tulum's beach-club party scene has seen shootings linked to drug dealing (Mia Beach Club in February 2024, Casa Jaguar and Taboo in March 2024, a worker at Tehmplo in January 2026). Don't buy drugs, and check your government's advice for Quintana Roo. In May 2026 the town's gender-equality director said discrimination against LGBT+ people still happens, and her department offers free legal and psychological support.
    • Health: the municipality ran free HIV testing in late 2025, but we found no CAPASITS HIV clinic in Tulum itself. Bring your own PrEP.
    • Season: high season runs from December to March. Sargassum seaweed can cover the beaches from spring to early autumn.
