The honest summary: Tignes is a purpose-built ski resort of about 1,900 residents at 1,550–2,100 m in the Savoie Alps, and for 51 weeks of the year it has no gay bar, club, sauna or cruising scene. For one week every March it becomes the gay capital of the Alps: European Snow Pride brings what the organiser says is more than a thousand LGBTQ+ skiers to Val Claret, with a Pride parade on skis, pool and DJ parties, and partner hotels. Come that week for the scene; come any other week for the skiing, in a resort whose council has publicly backed LGBTQ+ visitors.

What the scene actually looks like

We checked the resort's own listings (tignes.net, seetignes.com), Google Maps searches in English and French ("bar gay Tignes"), the European Snow Pride site and gay travel guides. Nothing in Tignes calls itself a gay or lesbian bar. Google returns the usual Val Claret après-ski bars for "gay bar Tignes" simply because they are the bars in town. We haven't listed any of them as gay, and we have removed an old listing of ours that described Arobaze, an ordinary Val Claret bar, as an LGBTQ+ spot without any source.

Outside Snow Pride week, Tignes nightlife is mixed après-ski: Val Claret has Cocorico, the Saloon, Melting Pot and the Blue Girl club; Le Lac has Loop, Strike and the Marmot Arms; Le Lavachet has L'Embuscade and Le Brasero. The Saloon is the seasonal workers' bar; the rest draw international ski groups. These are straight venues; in a 2018 survey of Snow Pride guests, published by the organiser, 92% said they found Tignes gay-friendly.

There is no sauna, no LGBTQ+ centre and no cruising area that we could verify anywhere in Tignes or the Tarentaise valley.

European Snow Pride: the week that matters

European Snow Pride runs for a week in late March, based in Val Claret. Its organiser, Olivier, set the current event up in 2012 after years running gay ski weeks; the event's own FAQ dates gay ski weeks in Tignes back to 2008. It now runs as "European Snow Pride Powered by SCRUFF".

    • Dates: 15–22 March 2025, 21–28 March 2026, and 20–27 March 2027 (announced on europeansnowpride.com and seetignes.com).
    • Size: the organiser calls it Europe's biggest gay ski week; misterb&b, repeating its PR, reported over 1,200 guests from 30+ countries and 40+ events in 2026. We haven't seen an independent count.
    • What happens: DJ parties at Tignespace (the resort's 3,000-capacity hall), a pool party at Le Lagon aquatic centre in Tignes le Lac, après-ski at the Chalet du Bollin on the slopes, cabaret dinners, the "Snow Gaymes" team contest, and group ski lessons.
    • Tignes Pride: the high-mountain Pride parade on skis, behind snowcats and led by the mayor, takes place during the week. It was founded in 2015 by the Fierté Montpellier Pride association, which called it the first Pride of the year in the northern hemisphere.
    • How to go: you need an Event Pass from the organiser; lift passes, lessons and equipment hire are add-ons. Packages sell out in the partner residences first, so book in the autumn.

According to the Snow Pride site, the resort signed an anti-homophobia-in-sport charter in 2013 and the town council voted unanimously in 2019 for a "friendly" label, the same year Tignes carried a rainbow flag at WorldPride in New York.

Not to be confused with: European Gay Ski Week (EGSW), the other big gay ski week, which started in Tignes in 2008 but has moved between resorts and is now in Val Thorens. Its 2027 edition is 13–20 March 2027, the week before Snow Pride.

    Where to stay

Tignes is spread over five villages: Les Brévières (1,550 m), Les Boisses or "Tignes 1800", Le Lavachet, Tignes le Lac (2,100 m, the main village with the lake and Le Lagon) and Val Claret (about 2,100–2,150 m, at the foot of the Grande Motte). Free shuttle buses link them; the Zenbus app shows where they are.

For Snow Pride week, stay in Val Claret. European Snow Pride's official partner list for 2027 includes Les Suites – Maison Bouvier (five-star suites), Le Terril Blanc in Le Lac, the CGH residences including Le Nevada, and the Ynycio and Quartz apartment residences. None of these is a gay hotel; they are mainstream properties that take the event's bookings.

Other hotels we list in Val Claret are Le Ski d'Or (four-star, ski-in), La Vanoise and Club Med Tignes (all-inclusive and family-heavy). In Tignes le Lac and Le Lavachet: VoulezVous, Le Diamond Rock, Le Refuge and the cheaper Langley Tignes 2100. Most hotels open only for the winter season and a short summer season.

    Seasons and skiing

    • Winter 2026/27: Tignes plans to open on 21 November 2026 and close on 2 May 2027 (provisional dates). The shared Tignes–Val d'Isère area, formerly Espace Killy, has about 300 km of pistes.
    • Summer: glacier skiing on the Grande Motte still ran in 2026 (20 June to 19 July, mornings only), but the lift company says it is preparing for the end of summer skiing as the glacier shrinks. Summer is mainly hiking, biking and the lake.
    • Snow Pride timing: late March usually means long days and spring snow; the high altitude keeps conditions reliable.

    Getting there

    • Train: the nearest station is Bourg-Saint-Maurice, about 30 km away; the T15 bus takes 45–55 minutes. Eurostar's winter ski service (with a change at Lille) runs on Saturdays from 19 December 2026 to 20 February 2027, so it doesn't cover Snow Pride week; take a TGV via Paris or Lyon instead.
    • Air: Chambéry (CMF) is the closest airport, about 140 km and 2–2.5 hours by road. Geneva (about 220 km, 3 hours) and Lyon (about 215 km, 3–3.5 hours) have far more flights. Shared transfers run from all three in season.
    • Driving: from 1 November to 31 March the Loi Montagne applies in Savoie: you need four winter tyres with the 3PMSF mark, or chains or snow socks in the car.

    Health and community

    • Free HIV and STI testing (CeGIDD): the nearest is at Albertville hospital, 253 rue Pierre de Coubertin, Tuesdays 17:00–19:00 only (04 79 89 54 03), about 85 km away. The main Savoie centre is the Espace de Santé Publique in Chambéry, 5 rue Pierre et Marie Curie.
    • PrEP is fully reimbursed in France and any GP can prescribe it; AIDES, a Snow Pride partner, can advise.
    • LGBTQ+ groups: nothing is based in Tignes. Contact Savoie, the Chambéry branch of the LGBT+ and families association Contact, is the nearest. Chambéry's Pride march was on 10 October 2026, and Grenoble's in June.

    Gone or wrongly listed

    • Arobaze (Val Claret): a real bar, but not a gay one. We had it as LGBTQ+ friendly with no source; it has been removed.
    • "Hotel Magic Circus" and "Hotel Chalet Rosalp": our older guide named these as Tignes hotels. Rosalp is in Verbier, Switzerland, and we found no Magic Circus hotel in Tignes.
    • European Gay Ski Week: left Tignes long ago; see Val Thorens.

    A few words in French

    • Semaine gay du ski: gay ski week
    • Marche des fiertés: Pride march
    • Forfait: lift pass
    • Navette: shuttle bus
    • Dépistage gratuit: free testing
