Medellín has one of the best sauna scenes in Latin America — and here, unlike much of the West, the bathhouse is still absolutely central to gay life, not a fading relic. The city's saunas are modern, social, and genuinely good, clustered around the gay heart of El Poblado and nearby. This guide covers the saunas, cruise clubs, and the practical details — including the honest safety notes that matter in Colombia.

The legal picture

Colombia is legally progressive: same-sex activity, marriage (since 2016) and adoption are all legal, and there's a national anti-discrimination law. Medellín specifically is welcoming — the paisas (locals) are famously warm and love meeting foreigners, and the city visibly backs LGBTQ+ safety. One traveller famously photographed a public sign in a Medellín hotel listing police fines, including one for homophobic abuse (around 657,000 pesos). That said, Colombia remains predominantly Catholic and socially conservative outside the scene, so keep public affection low-key, and take the safety notes below seriously — they're real, not boilerplate.

The saunas

    • Sauna Club 55 — the flagship, and one of the most upscale gay saunas in all of Colombia. Impeccably clean, modern, and clubhouse-like, with a courtyard bar, two jacuzzis, steam rooms, video rooms, private cabins, massages, a garden, and uniformed security on the door. Draws a young, attractive, professional crowd — busiest on Sunday afternoons, with a diverse mix. Men-only. Calle 55 #45-44, open daily 14:00–21:30 (great for a mid-afternoon session). The one recurring gripe: the bar music can be loud for conversation.
    • Sauna Olympo (Olympo Club) — a large three-story facility with Turkish baths, sauna, jacuzzi, bar, video rooms, and private rooms. Both relaxation and erotic massage services can be booked, and there are regular themed events like 2-for-1 entry. Carrera 78 #45-17, open Tuesday–Saturday 14:00–22:00, Sundays 13:00–21:00.
    • Club Hammamm — quieter and more relaxed than the other two. Known for its youth discount — "pollos" (their term for 18–23-year-olds) get 50% off, and free entry on the last Saturday of each month. Carrera 45 #46-27, open daily 10:00–20:00, until midnight on weekends.

    Cruise & sex clubs

    • Sillón Rojo Club — Medellín's dedicated cruise/sex club (Av. 33 #65b-22), for when you want an explicitly cruisy sex-club environment rather than a sauna.

    The nightlife connection

    The bars and clubs are concentrated in and around El Poblado (with a growing scene in Laureles — Purple Club, Viva — and grittier spots in the Centro). The scene runs late — Colombians start well after midnight.     Important safety notes — read these

    Medellín is welcoming, but Colombia requires real caution and a few scene-specific warnings:

    • Rideshare, door to door. Use Uber, DiDi, or Cabify to get to and from every venue — don't walk to saunas or bars, especially at night or in the Centro. This is the single most important rule.
    • The "rentboy" reality. Sex work is legal in Colombia only in designated tolerance zones, but sex workers do frequent some saunas. It's part of the landscape here; just be aware, set your own boundaries, and know that anyone who's too forward may be working.
    • Scopolamine ("la burundanga") and drink-spiking — take this seriously. Colombia has a well-documented problem with drugging-and-robbery, often via dating apps (Grindr) or someone met in a bar. Never leave a drink unattended, be cautious about invitations back to a private place from someone you just met online, and meet first in public. This is the most important safety issue for gay travellers in Medellín, above petty theft.
    • "No dar papaya." The local phrase means "don't give an opportunity" — keep your phone, cash and valuables discreet, don't flash expensive gear, and you remove most of the risk.
    • Zona and PDA. El Poblado is safe and walkable by day; the Centro saunas are best reached by car. Keep public affection minimal outside venues.

    Practical notes

    • Money. Bring Colombian pesos (COP) in cash for sauna entry; card readers aren't universal. Entry is cheap by Western standards.
    • Timing. Saunas are afternoon-to-evening (most open from 14:00; Club Hammamm from 10:00). The nightlife is very late — pace yourself.
    • Language. Spanish rules here — English is limited outside the tourist-facing venues. A translation app and a few words of Spanish go a long way with the warm, welcoming paisas.
    • Confirm before you go. Check a venue's Instagram or Facebook the same day for current hours and events — the scene is active and programming changes. Club 55, Olympo and Hammamm are the reliable anchors.
