What reviewers say

Visitors frequently praise the HI Halifax Heritage House for its excellent downtown location, proximity to the waterfront, and well-maintained heritage building with spacious, clean common areas like the kitchen and lounge. However, several guests report negative experiences with staff, citing rudeness, ignorance, alleged racial profiling, and issues with stolen belongings, while others found the accommodation expensive for a hostel and noted the lack of privacy with bunk beds.

Everything is great here. The rooms are a bit small, but tidy.

The room was exceptionally clean and surprisingly more comfortable and convenient than it appeared in the photos. The location is another major plus—right in the heart of downtown, making it easy to walk to many nearby attractions. The kitchenette was also spotless and well‑maintained, which made our stay even more convenient. If there’s one thing that could be improved, it would be the reception experience. The receptionist wasn’t as friendly or welcoming as we had hoped, though everything was still handled properly, so it wasn’t a major issue—just something that could make the stay feel even better. One thing to note: the Google Maps pin leads you toward a back alley, which can be a bit confusing at first. The actual entrance is directly on the main street, and once you know that, it’s fairly easy to find. Overall, the cleanliness, comfort, and excellent location made this a great place to stay, with just a small area for improvement in terms of hospitality.

I stay close to 200 nights a year in hotels due to work, and honestly this was the cleanest and most comfortable place I have stayed in for a while.

I've stayed at the 2 hostels I know about in Halifax and this is the superior of the two. Let's start with the good! - Location is AMAZING. You are right near everything, cut pub across the street, inexpensive restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Wonderful! - The beds were super comfy and there were ear plugs everywhere available for free. There were not one, but two very loud snorers in my room and I simply would not have made it through the night without these earplugs. - The staff were really nice. They felt genuine and kind. - On weekends, local parking is free and on weekdays you can pay through a handy dandy app on your phone, so it is less likely you'll end up with a hefty towing charge or parking ticket. - Every single person I met while I was staying there was truly lovely. The less good? - I really dislike hostels that don't have privacy curtains. It would be so easy to have these installed and they don't. - They don't use duvet covers or wash the blankets betweeen guests. Gross. I tried not to use the blanket at all, but it was a bit cold for that. I would really suggest they invest in duvet covers. - The showers are TINY. I mean, your clothes, your towel - everything you want to keep dry is going to at least get damp if not worse. More options for hanging things in the shower stalls would be amazing. - The coffee is not replenished in the morning and it's not super clear how to refill the carafe on your own. If you say you make coffee until noon, then do that please! - Check in isn't until 4pm, which feels a bit late in the day. What in the world are you doing for 5 hours (check out is at 11am) to prepare a few beds for new guests? - The lockers do not come with a locking device. Go to dollarama and get one for just $2.50 - but really, it would be nice if they offered them for sale at that price right on site. Overall though, I am very likely to stay there again. It's affordable and gets the job done. TOP TIP: Go eat at the Iranian place (Shiraz) just one block away. Delicious!

Wonderful staff. Interesting people from around the world and across Canada. No big group events or organized outings. Some tips on the poster board by the door Excellent tips from fellow travellers on food and music. I’d love to see more. Front desk staff very helpful when I asked for Rocco’s. Thanks to the hostel team! And thanks for coffee with milk and teabags. Very clean rooms and bathrooms. Kitchen was fully stocked and system for stored belongings was appreciated

Clean rooms, clean washrooms, secure building, and easy after-hours check-in! I could have done with more maps to help me find the washroom in the morning, but that's so minor. I'm looking forward to staying again!
