About this place Max's Place

Max's Place is a neighbourhood gay dive bar at 4621 North Clark Street, on the southern edge of Andersonville. It is a low-key spot with cheap drinks, a jukebox and a regulars-at-the-bar feel. You come here for a beer and conversation, not for dancing or shows. It rates 4.6 on Google from about 190 reviews, and reviewers mostly mention the bartenders and the prices. The bigger Andersonville bars are a short walk north on Clark, so Max's makes a quiet first or last stop on a night out in the area. We have no opening hours on file, so check before you go.

Needed a drink after a long shift, so I swung by Max's. It's always got that low-key hum of people unwinding. A little loud sometimes, but the bartender was quick and friendly. Good for a quiet nightcap, mostly.

what a lovely place to sit, dish, discuss, chat, engage, and watch the occasional creeper strike out

One of my favorite bars in Chicago. It’s the perfect mix of dive bar and neighborhood hangout. They have a huge beer selection, a full bar, and they finally take credit cards. The TouchTunes is usually active but not so busy that you can’t get a song in, and there’s a dart board in the back that’s fun when the crowd is a little lighter. The patio has been a great addition and is now open daily until 10 PM. It includes a brand new surprisingly nice and clean patio bathroom, and they sometimes open a cantina-style outdoor bar with nearly the same options as the main bar inside. A few other things I appreciate: there’s a water spigot available if you need a glass of water (near the dart board) and they keep inexpensive snacks behind the bar if you’re looking for a bag of chips with your drink. Just an easygoing neighborhood spot that keeps getting a little better every year.
